Helping Coventry to Shop Safer this Christmas

Thousands of items are being handed out in Coventry City Centre to help people shop safer in the lead-up to Christmas.
 
Coventry Business Improvement District (BID) is hosting a series of crime prevention and safety days in the city centre and has invested in more than 12,000 items to give out to the public.
 
It is the second year that the BID has carried out the initiative but this year it has invested in additional items to cater for high demand.
 
Shoppers can access a free supply of more than 7,000 purse dipping bells, 4,500 credit card defenders, 1,000 purse cables and 1,000 secure shopping bags.
 
Events are taking place in the city centre to hand out the items and the first day saw thousands of items handed out.
 
The next event for shoppers to obtain the free safety items will be held by the foundation near Lower Precinct on Thursday, December 5 from 10am to 2pm.
 
The BID is also providing shoppers with advice and guidance on how to stay safe while Christmas shopping.
 
It comes as visitor numbers grow in the lead-up to Christmas, with late night shopping events taking place every Wednesday evening, and the Christmas market and big wheel bringing more people into the heart of Coventry.
 
The BID is also working with banks and building societies to ensure the safety items are handed out directly to their customers – in particular the credit card defenders, which help to prevent cyber-theft by acting as a digital defender against fraud.
 
Purse dipping bells and purse cables will also be available from banks across the city centre from Tuesday, December 3.
 
The city centre’s Retail BID Street Patrol will also be increasing their patrols for late night shopping to further deter and report crime and anti-social behaviour.

This Christmas, Coventry is coming together to bring smiles to children across the country! CVOne NightClubs, in partnership with Cash for Kids, is working to ensure kids wake up to presents on Christmas morning.
 
The Festive Highlights
The campaign includes the creation of a special music video to the beloved Christmas classic Fairytale of New York. Featuring the incredible talents of Kristy Pepper, MJ Reevy, and Molly Morgan, the video promises to bring festive cheer and inspire generosity. Filming is already underway, with the video set to release on December 1st.
Alongside the video, the campaign will feature ads promoting donations to Samoan Joe’s Toy Drive and encouraging contributions through the Cash for Kids website.
 
A Call to Action for Coventry Businesses
Coventry BID is rallying its corporate partners to get involved in a creative way! Businesses are encouraged to:
  • Record a video of themselves purchasing toys.
  • Nominate two other businesses to buy and donate £100 worth of toys within 24 hours.
This exciting challenge not only supports a great cause but also provides businesses with engaging content to boost their brand visibility, watch out for the BIDs video later today!
BID UPDATES
CRIME REDUCTION MEETING
 
Coventry BID held its monthly Crime Reduction Meeting at the BID offices last Tuesday. It was a great opportunity to introduce Stuart Granger who has taken the role as BID Security Manager. Stuart brings a wealth of experience in both retail and security to Coventry BID.
 
HSBC did a presentation regarding Banking Fraud for Businesses Accounts and also Personal Accounts. They talked about how to spot fraud which was really informative, and that 1.17 billion pounds worth of fraud had been prevented last year. They talked about banks having their own APPs to help with fraud prevention.
 
Sargent Adam Lewis talked about the current crime reporting figures and that they were up 84% on last year. He spoke about key people in the city involved in ASB and shop theft had been given Criminal Behaviour Orders, these ban the individuals from the city centre. Two of these people had broken their CBO and have received prison sentences for doing this. His key ask was that businesses report all crime via 999 or 101 so that we have a true picture of crime in the city centre.
 
There will be no CRM in December, the next meeting will be in January, invites will be sent out in due course.
