Today, on World AIDS Day, we pause to remember and honor the lives lost to HIV/AIDS, reflect on the progress we've made, and acknowledge the work still ahead. This day serves as a reminder of the strength, resilience, and courage within our community. It’s also an opportunity to show love and support to those living with HIV, while continuing to raise awareness and fight for an end to the stigma that still surrounds the virus.

Together, we stand in solidarity, in remembrance, and in hope for a world where everyone can live free from fear and discrimination. Let’s keep pushing for progress, for education, and for a future where no one has to face this battle alone.

Black LGBTQ+ Stories on Screen
by R. Ayité Okyne, Editor

The past few years have witnessed a remarkable surge in the cinematic representation of Black LGBTQ+ experiences. these films have not only entertained but also challenged societal norms, sparked important conversations, and provided much-needed visibility for the Black LGBTQ+ community. They have delved into diverse themes, from historical figures and coming-of-age stories to explorations of identity, love, and loss. By showcasing the complexities and nuances of Black LGBTQ+ lives, these films have made significant contributions to the cultural landscape, fostering empathy, understanding, and acceptance. Here are some to watch:

1. Rustin (2023)
  • Why Watch: This historical drama delves into the life of Bayard Rustin, a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement. The film, directed by George C. Wolfe, highlights Rustin's significant contributions while also exploring his sexuality and the challenges he faced as a Black gay man.
2. The Color Purple (2023)
  • Why Watch: A reimagining of the beloved 1985 film, this adaptation offers a fresh perspective on the story of Celie, a Black woman who endures hardship and finds strength through love, resilience, and sisterhood. The film's portrayal of queer relationships and the complexities of identity is both poignant and powerful.
3. Anything's Possible (2022)
  • Why Watch: This heartwarming coming-of-age story follows Kelsa, a Black cisgender girl, and Khal, a trans boy, as they navigate high school, love, and self-discovery. The film celebrates diversity, acceptance, and the power of young love.
4. Brother (2022)
  • Why Watch: This British drama explores themes of family, love, and loss. The film follows two estranged brothers who reconnect and confront their past, all while navigating their own personal struggles with sexuality and identity.
5. I Don't Know Who You Are (2023)
  • Why Watch: This thought-provoking film centers around a young Black man who, after a traumatic event, wakes up with no memory of his past. As he attempts to piece together his life, he must also confront his sexuality and the prejudices he faces.
These films are just a few examples of the growing body of work that is amplifying Black LGBTQ+ voices and experiences. By exploring diverse themes, challenging stereotypes, and celebrating love in all its forms, these films are making a significant impact on the cinematic landscape.

How long have you been in the Palm Springs area and where did you come from or have you lived previously?
I have been in Palm Springs area for three years now. Before that I lived between here and Nashville, Tennessee. I was born and raised in the tri-state area, primarily New York.

What kind of work do you do and/or how have you been involved in the community?
I am an Interior Designer. I have done In- services and talks in the community stressing the importance of keeping the interiors of our homes sustainable, and the importance of good home maintenance.

Why is BOD/Brothers of the Desert important to you?
Connecting with Brothers of the desert was important to me because, having not lived here long, I was looking for a social situation where I felt like I belonged. Where I could meet, network and establish relationships with people similar and different to myself.

What are your hobbies or non-work activities that bring you pleasure?
In my free time, I enjoy fitness, reading, movies, and doing various art projects.

What is your lifelong dream?
It is always been a dream of mine to go into the inner city schools and revamp the old-school home economics program. To teach our young people the basics of good housekeeping and preparing meals for themselves and their families.

Hello, Brothers!

As we step into this holiday season, I can’t help but marvel at the magic of our community here in the Coachella Valley. From the warm sun that shines brighter than most Christmas tree lights (yes, here's to 70-degree Decembers), to the incredible tapestry of culture, resilience, and joy that defines our community, there’s so much to celebrate—and to be grateful for.

Gratitude is where my heart lingers this season. I’m thankful for the beauty of this desert oasis, the laughter we’ve shared in our gatherings, the soul-stirring art and music that moves us, and the steady, uplifting presence of each of you. There’s something truly special about knowing you’re part of a family that gets it—a family that supports, celebrates, and loves you just as you are.

The holidays, for me, are about belonging. And I hope you feel it too: the profound sense that you belong here. Whether it’s at a potluck dinner with collard greens that could make your grandma jealous, a holiday celebration reminding us of the rich traditions of our heritage, or just a quiet conversation under the desert stars, we are a brotherhood.

And let’s not forget about optimism—it’s been our superpower all along. As the year winds down, I’m choosing to embrace the possibilities of the year ahead. Let’s imagine it together: a community that grows stronger, a world that opens wider, and lives that feel fuller. Let’s keep building, dreaming, and showing the world what it means to thrive.

So this holiday season, whether you’re trimming a palm tree with ornaments, lighting a kinara for Kwanzaa, or trying to explain to relatives why we’re still in flip-flops, remember this: You’re surrounded by love, history, and possibility. And no matter what challenges come our way, we’ll meet them as we always do—with grace, grit, and a good dose of humor.

Here’s to a joyful holiday season and an extraordinary new year! And please, save me some sweet potato pie—I’m serious.

With love, laughter, and gratitude,
Ayité
