Hey First name / friend,
A writer friend recently told me, referring to the book sheâs been wanting to write for years now, âI hate writing but love having written.â
I soooo relate. And itâs especially frustrating because it just doesnât make sense.
Why does doing something we care about SO much feel SO hard???
Often, that prompts a vicious cycle of questions:
- Is this idea the ârightâ one after all?
- Am I actually qualified to write this?
- Am I even a âreal writerâ at all??
Beneath those doubts is the belief that, if the project is right and weâre even half the writer we aspire to be, the writing will be easy. Or at least it wonât be anywhere near this hard.
As a result, we suspect that if writing feels hardâespecially if we care intensely about the projectâit means weâre doing something wrong. Or maybe that we ARE wrong.
In reality, that caringâthat passion you have for this particular projectâis exactly why itâs so hard.
Truth bomb: The more you care, the harder it is.
Thatâs why you can probably write pretty easily when it comes to certain things, but when you open up the document that holds THE PROJECT, it suddenly feels completely different.
And by different, I mean awful.
And then extra awful because SHOULDNâT IT FEEL AMAZING???
I used to think passion = motivation. And so I was stuck in the âthis should be easyâ shame trap for years. Freedom only came when I realized that, counterintuitively, the projects weâre most passionate about are often the ones that are hardest to write.
This realization, plus several others, has revolutionized my relationship with my novel, unlocking the door to creative play and a joyful writing routine. Now, Iâm making meaningful progress on my passion projectâand having fun doing it!
Think about your own passion projectâthat book idea, maybe a partial draft or outline, languishing in a mental, digital, or literal drawer.
How would it feel to actually finish itâwithout having to beat yourself up or literally tie yourself to your desk?
Now think about this:
You could make more progress on your manuscript in the next month than you have in the last year.
I know itâs possible because Iâve done it. And let me tell you, it feels SO good.
If youâre ready to break free of your creative blocks, cultivate a healthy relationship with your writing, and finally finish that project youâve been thinking about for so long, join me for
