INSIDE: A FUN SURVEY & A BRIEF GEOGRAPHY
Image item
Winter Meets Fall, Roanoke, Virginia
Hello out there, friends.

My photography practice is as much about connecting with the natural world as it is about making beautiful images. As we enter the winter season, I am looking forward to all that winter has to offer, and thinking of a book I read last year that has had a huge impact on how I perceive this season. The book is Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May in which she explores the concept of personal "winters" - difficult periods in our lives when we feel cut off, frozen, or dormant. Through memoir and observation, May argues that these challenging seasons are not just times to be endured but can be transformative periods of rest, reflection and renewal, much like winter is in the natural world. She weaves together personal experiences with observations of how cultures, animals, and plants handle the cold season, suggesting that learning to "winter" well - to accept and even embrace these fallow periods - is essential for human wellbeing and growth. I am embracing winter this year, seeking rest, reflection and renewal ahead of a new year of personal and artistic growth. I wish the same for you.

I have just a few updates for you this month, including:

Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May has the power to reframe your perception of both difficult times as well as the winter season itself. Highly recommend!

Jennifer Renwick's gorgeous images of the aurora above Glacier National Park are the focus of her newest free eBook, Beneath a Dancing Sky - can't say enough about how moving her work is.  Check it out.

A local restaurant serves a cheese made for me…  Humboldt Fog is an incredible new-to-me cheese - award winning, made from goat's milk, and very special.  And with a name like this, I was bound to love it.  Highly recommend for stinky cheese lovers - try it yourself. My husband and I were able to find it in our local grocery store :)

The Art of Place empowers creative landscape & nature photographers to elevate their artistry and find meaningful connections with the natural world.

It's like art school… but for nature photographers.
