December Prompt 1
Festive
Sparkling lights, merriment, excitement, and a little bit of magic--I hope this prompt helps you tap into what makes you feel festive, what brings you joy!

This season can stir up a variety of emotions and memories. One thing I've learned throughout the years is that completely opposite feelings can coexist: anger and appreciation, grief and joy, anxiety and hope. I think we all need to be reminded from time to time that this is OK and that we all deserve to feel all these emotions, including the warm fuzzy ones, even in-- and maybe especially during-- the tougher times.

I also wanted to add, please feel free to go all out! If you feel like it, apply that extra layer of paint, add more glitter, use that super bright color, mix up patterns and textures and techniques! As our second to last prompt of the year, truly have fun with it and don't hold back! :)

Below are some different ideas that I hope will help you connect with this prompt along with an art movement and one of my favorite artists for additional inspiration!

(And if you are drawn to the above image, here are some similar ones if you want to try using it as a reference photo!)

ENVISION & EXPRESS

  • What does festive look like? Try your hand at abstract art and create a piece translating how this word would like like to you! Consider how you use your sketchbook page / negative and positive space, colors, opacity, shapes, finish (shiny vs matte for example). Feel free to mix up materials as well and you can add text, stickers, cut outs from magazines, etc. to help you achieve the look and vibe you're going for. If the word festive doesn't connect, try one of these synonyms:
  • Winter holidays and traditions from around the world Do you have any traditions for this time of year or is there one you'd like to start? Share this in your piece whether it's a depiction of the activity or an item from it, an abstract take, a close up detailed look, a storyboard or comic, or a drawing with some text like a picture book.
  • Sparkle & Light
    • How can you incorporate glitter into your piece? You can also try making your own “glitter” by cutting shiny paper into smaller pieces or pouring glitter onto the sticky side of a piece of tape and then using that.
    • Speaking of glitter, I had to include Pink's song and performance for Glitter In The Air! It's one of my favorite songs and her acrobatic work is just amazing! (She performed this at the Grammy's but I couldn't find a good version of it!)
    • How to paint glowing elements with watercolor and gouache
    • Painting lights with watercolor for beginners
    • Work by candlelight
    • Get out any metallic markers or paints you may have
  • Mood Board Some ideas, tutorials, and vibes in this festive inspired board
  • Winter landscape mini watercolors It doesn't always have to be loud and noisy for things to be festive, sometimes it's finding the moments of peace and quiet like the scenes painted in this tutorial
DECEMBER ART MOVEMENT & ARTIST
Maximalism & Peter Max

Vibrant and eclectic, a mix of patterns, shapes, colors, and textures, layered elements, ornate and decorative details, abundant, extravagant--this is what the maximalist art movement was all about!

I was recently thinking about the question, what art piece would you want to live in? And it reminded me of Peter Max--I absolutely loved his work when I first discovered it and still do! He was known for his colorful energetic work (as you'll see below) and was one of the key figures in this art movement.

Take a look at his work below--what do you like or dislike in his work? How does he create movement and motion? How does he utilize linework and colors? How do these pieces make you feel? Follow your observations and use some of the elements that catch your eye!
Make Every Day Earth Day
(this is one of the art pieces I'd like to live in!)
