Eastern White Pine, Pinus strobus, is a fast-growing tree native to the northeast and Appalachian Mountains, thriving in eastern Kansas where it requires cool, moist, and well-drained soil. While prized for its soft foliage as a Christmas tree, it faces challenges like winter burn and lower survival rates, but still remains popular for both Christmas tree farming and use in windbreaks in appropriate conditions.

Keep an eye out for rodent tunnels around your trees as temperatures turn cooler. Young tree roots and bark can be fed on by mice, rats, and voles, especially under cover of snow or heavy leaf litter. 
Keep grass and weeds trimmed lower in the winter and rake leaves so they are not thick around tree bark. Mulch should always be applied as a donut, not a volcano. If rodents are present, ensure species specific control measures.
