…It represents birth, and the promise of what’s ahead. As we gather warmth from family and friends, we are reminded of the power within us to continue advocating for our Black and Brown scholars, ensuring their brilliance thrives in the face of challenges.
This season, I reflect on my own story, born on Christmas Eve and named Gina Louise—a legacy rooted in resilience and pride. Like our presence in independent schools, names carry weight, declaring our belonging and value in spaces that often challenge us to justify them. Today, that challenge is intensifying as efforts to devalue diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) ripple across institutions.
But we are here to rise. We bring a dynamic energy to these spaces that cannot be diminished. Affinity spaces—our first communities within communities—remain vital, offering the solidarity and strength we need to thrive.
As we look to the new year, let us rest, connect, and prepare to joyfully flex our influence. The vision bestowed upon us by those who came before shines bright within us. Together, we ensure that our scholars and families not only survive but thrive, illuminating a path for generations to come.
In this newsletter, we revisit the past to rise in the future, reflect on gifting, and look ahead to Winter Break with family and friends!
Happy Holidays to you and yours, and thank you for being part of this remarkable journey.
With gratitude and hope,
Gina Parker Collins
