Word From Ford
To say ARWC24 Ecuador was an incredible showcase of talent and endurance is an understatement. The culture, the Ecuadorian people, the diverse landscape, the food and the incredible hospitality from Race Director Santiago Lopez and his organizers was truly incredible.
We came home filled with ideas, feedback and an increased excitement to deliver a world-class event that reflects everything that we have to showcase here in Canada next year.
This was Huairasinchi's 20th edition which brought teams from 26 countries together to navigate Ecuador’s stunning and diverse terrains. The race took participants through everything from the dense rainforest to towering 4000m + Andean peaks and local towns & villages. We witnessed an event that tested speed, endurance, and teamwork.
Despite the challenges experienced by the organizers, including wildfires, drought conditions, power outages and the logistical hurdles of its remote setting, it was a resounding success. Ecuador’s breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage made it an unforgettable experience for us and everyone involved.
We were so proud of all the Canadian racers in attendance too. Particularly Team Expedition Canada with Captain Ben Kwiatkowski, Jasper Edge, Kiah Davidson, and Tom Hardy. They showed remarkable resilience and teamwork, finishing 16th in this highly competitive event. Their efforts truly reflect the spirit of Canadian adventure racing and will undoubtedly inspire future racers.
Expedition Canada's teammate James Galipeau raced alongside Team Packraft Ecuador as well as fellow Canadian's Alex Provost & Karine Corbeil with Bend Racing/ 4 Hour Fuel to round out the Canadian contingent.
Looking ahead, we are incredibly excited to host ARWC in Penticton, British Columbia and the surrounding area on a 700+km course next year. When speaking to racers we shared that we are designing a course that will emphasize navigation. Participants can expect map-and-compass sections & orienteering through dense forests, mountain ranges, and some uniquely Canadian landmarks.
Our incredible access to world class paddling will add an extra layer of complexity, requiring sharp decision-making and strong teamwork. It will be a race to remember and one not to be missed!
Other questions from racers in Ecuador (especially those from southern climates...) were what weather conditions racers can expect in late September and early October. During the day, temperatures in Penticton will likely range from +15°C to +25°C (54°F to 68°F). While at night, especially in high elevations, temperatures could drop near low single digits. Layering and weatherproof gear is recommended, the reward; racing against the backdrop of BC's incredible natural beauty.
While we are capping participation to ensure a high-quality experience for everyone, registration is now OPEN and spots are filling up FAST, with several coming in after the Ecuadorian event. And now that the ARWS World Championships event is returning to Canada after more than 20 years, I expect the remaining spots to sell out quickly in the new year.
This is a unique opportunity for racers to push their limits while embracing the wild Canadian landscape. If you’re planning to join us, preparation will be key—stay tuned for announcements, ensure your team’s qualifications are in place, and don’t wait too long to register. Expedition Canada 2025 will be a celebration of everything that makes adventure racing and Canada so extraordinary. Don't miss it... You Won't Be SORRY you came!
