Time has a curious way of stretching and compressing, especially when we travel. Those long waits to begin your trip can feel endless, while the journeys themselves often seem to vanish too quickly. It’s only in looking back, as we do at year’s end, that we gain perspective.

Despite the challenges of this year—from rising costs and inflation to crowded destinations—you still chose to cross oceans and time zones. Because there is a deep human need, I believe, to step outside the comfort of the familiar and reawaken your desire to explore new places.

And I am glad you did.

Returning from these journeys, the questions come from family and friends: "What did you do? Tell me everything!" And while you could recount every detail, you’re a lot more likely to start with a single, shimmering moment or a feeling you’ve not felt before. It is these moments—the feelings and experiences—that truly define our travels. These are the stories we hold closest.

So as we enter this time of reflection, marked by wrapped playlists, advent calendars, and countdowns to New Year, let’s look back at Sudden Journeys 2024 year of shimmering moments and all that was.

Oh The Places We Went!
In 2024, I sent you – over 322 of my fellow travelers – all over Europe and the UK. Whether you joined a tour, booked a travel consultation or we planned your travels together, what a year of travels we had!

Where did wanderlust take us most?
  • England, Scotland, Italy, and Ireland topped the charts as the most traveled destination.
  • The dramatic wilds of Scotland was the number one spot for desired destinations.
  • You traveled to 15 individual countries and 21 country combinations.
  • You mostly traveled as couples, friends and multigenerational families on epic adventures across several countries and weeks. Impressive!
  • Your average trip length was 9 days.
  • Number one asked question after “can you help me?!”  –how do I rent a car and do you think I can drive on the left side of the road
  • London continues to be the number one requested city for accommodations.
  • This year I stayed in more than 86 hotels researching new places to offer you and to my groups.
  • My very favorite hotel stay was at this enchanting riad on the edge of the Medina in Marrakech, Morocco. I am already planning to return.
  • Hands down my most memorial dining experience was the harvest dinner at this farm to table spot in Cornwall as it hit all the right spots: inviting atmosphere, perfect menu, creative welcome drinks, fantastic food, live music, service and wonderful setting. It was an affair to remember. This 15 course tasting menu was a close second here (Solihul), Most indulgent hotel breakfast spread in Morocco. Best Old Fashioned here (Kent), and most creative cocktails here (Nashville) and here (Glasgow).
  • Most-likely-to-be-haunted hotel (Warwickshire), Best Bathtub (Cotswolds), Best Bed (London), Best Hotel Staff (London), Best Rooms with A View Here room #61 (Paris) & Here apartment #C (Athens), Most Overpriced and not worth the hype here (Savannah)
  • Best Rooftops here (London), here (Edinburgh) and here (Athens), Best Breakfast in Bed here (Paris) and here (London),
  • Stunning scenic rail journey here (Switzerland), a scene out of a movie moment (Norway), if you have 12 hours in a city, hang in this neighborhood (Lisbon)
  • Unique walking tour here (Athens), memorable music experiences honky tonk nights here (Nashville), bluegrass jam here (Western NC), jazz here (Paris) and country here (Glasgow)
  • Hotel redemption story here (Nashville) read the shocking reviews of its former self here.
  • Most beautiful rental property with a view of the sea here (Cornwall), best day trip from London (Kent), Most unique coffeeshop here (Isle of Skye)
My own insatiable curiosity never sleeps. I embarked on countless research trips, reconnecting with forever favorites, discovering new experiences, and mapping out thrilling possibilities for the journeys we'll explore together.

“I just love your heart! I wish I could come on another grand adventure with you this next year, to see the sights, but even more, to just hang out with you! Words fall short when I try and describe my experience on the Cottages and Roses tour this past May. I'm still brought to tears thinking of all that we saw and experienced and the beauty of new friends. We have all been blessed by you.”

My Journal Always Within Reach
Upon my return from various adventures, my reflections and revelations transform into what I call Notes from Afar. This year you, the reader, responded most to the conversations on solo travel as an opportunity to reclaim a part of oneself, my first impressions of Marrakech, and practical tips regarding phone safety when traveling abroad. These personal reflections on places – and people – are one of the ways I hope to spark your travel inspiration.

How You Traveled This Year
While there continued to be numerous solo women, mother-daughter duos and pairs of friends traveling together, there are two categories that stood out this year:

Just the Two Of Us | Couples
The couples who joined the tours were a true gift. Witnessing the depth of their connections, some forged over many decades, was deeply moving. I went into these tours hoping to offer something of value – which I believe I did – yet I came away inspired and encouraged by the visible testament of their love and commitment to one another. And the laughter! The joy of delight in one another did not go unnoticed.

Sister Love | Siblings
As the eldest of three sisters, childhood road trips were often less than idyllic. The back of our family’s minivan became a battleground, a constant negotiation of personal space and shared air. So, it was especially heartening to see the sister duos who joined the tours. Their dynamic was so different from my own childhood experiences. It was a gentle reminder of the unique bond between siblings and offered a beautiful example of how to nurture a sibling bond while still allowing room for autonomy and individual experience.

Traveling – solo or together –  leaves an indelible mark. We return home, with a renewed connection to ourselves and our loved ones, shattered cultural biases, and a newfound perspective on our place in the universe.

"It was truly a dream come true to go on one of your trips! I had no idea it would have been Cornwall, but I am so glad this was the place to experience wonder, magic and a wildness my soul needed at this point in my life. Your love for art, beauty, belonging, and place are woven into the tiniest of details. I've learn so much this week. Thank you!"

Personal Highlights of the Year
It would be easy to only share of my company highlights for the year but felt I'd share a few of my own:
  • My mom joining me on The English Countryside Tour, it was beyond special to have her experience what I love doing for a living.
  • Taking my kids on an epic Italian Adventure was a dream come true for me.
  • Traveling to Scotland with my parents and sister, watching the sunrise over Glencoe.
  • Witnessing the Northern Lights – twice!
  • Returning to central Norway with my dad to meet our distant relatives, what an unforgettable moment!
  • A summer weekend together with all my kids and their partners at a beach house on the Florida panhandle. How I've missed having them all together.
  • Seeing The Cure for their album release show live in London was unreal. Even now I return there in my mind.
  • Training several tour leaders to take over tours in 2025 and seeing tours I've dreamt of creating come to life.
  • Marrakech, Morocco.. the entire experience.

QUOTE

“That is the magic of travel. You leave your home secure in your own knowledge and identity. But as you travel, the world in all its richness intervenes. You meet people you could not invent; you see scenes you could not imagine. Your own world, which was so large as to consume your whole life, becomes smaller and smaller until it is only one tiny dot in time and space. You return a different person.”
