In this issue, we’re proud to spotlight two deserving recipients of forestry awards, showcasing innovative practices that enhance Kansas landscapes. Dr. Philip Gipson, a biologist and lifelong tree enthusiast, is the recipient of the 2024 Kansas Agroforestry Award for his outstanding conservation efforts in Wabaunsee County. Since 2004, he has transformed his property near Munkers Creek through Riparian Forest Buffer plantings and over 86 acres of trees, including Bur oak, Black walnut, and American plum.

Dr. Gipson’s dedication extends to innovative practices like installing Beaver Dam Analogs within a Wetland Reserve Program Conservation Easement, enhancing water flow and ecological health. His work exemplifies sustainable land management and the spirit of agroforestry.

Dan and Susan Willard of Valley Falls, Kansas, have been honored with the 2024 Forest Stewardship Tree Farmer of the Year Award for their exemplary forest management. Their 70 acres of forest stand improvement and 50 acres of prairie restoration have improved wildlife habitat, ecosystem functionality, and recreation in their oak-hickory woodlands.

Beyond their stewardship, the Willards actively engage with the forestry community, hosting educational tours, and inspiring others to embrace sustainable land management. Their efforts set a high standard for forest stewardship in Kansas.
