In her book Minimalista, Shira Gill shares a piece of advice her mom gave her: "You can do everything, but you can't do everything all at once." This principle has become a cornerstone in my life.
In the past, overcommitting and being overly ambitious with my time left me overwhelmed and unable to be fully present in the things I care about.
The start of the year often motivates us to pursue our goals. You may be feeling inspired to organize your home this year. If so—great! I love that energy. And if not, that's okay too.
Either way, my advice for the start of the year is to take it slow.
Organizing can be intense, especially if your goal is lasting change. It takes time to make decisions about your belongings. So even a few minutes a day is progress.
For example, I spent 20 minutes organizing my daughter's room today. Here's what I accomplished:
- Removed a few pairs of pants she doesn't like (she made it VERY clear) and dozens of socks that no longer fit.
- Relabeled her drawers to include a space for her "treasures".
- Rearranged her baby cribs to give her more space.
Her room felt more functional and it wasn't overwhelming in that short time. She even got into it with me. So, please, take your time.
