February 2025
Welcome to the February edition of the Kansas Canopy Newsletter!

This week we celebrate Kansas Wildfire Awareness Week (February 10–14, 2025). The Kansas Forest Service, in partnership with the Kansas Division of Emergency Management and the Kansas Fire Marshal, is dedicated to sharing vital wildfire safety messages across social media.

This week, we aim to raise awareness and remind Kansans of the true cost of wildfires—both to our environment and communities. Together, we can help prevent and mitigate the devastating impacts of these events.

Additionally, our training calendar this month includes several pack test opportunities for firefighters, helping to ensure we’re all prepared for the challenges of wildfire season.
In this issue, we’re excited to highlight the Shumard Oak as our feature tree of the month—an impressive species known for its robust growth and vibrant fall foliage. In our podcast episode, we also delve into the 2023 prescribed burning at Baldwin Woods, offering insights on the benefits of controlled burns in forest management.

This month marks the launch of the 2025 Volunteer Fire Assistance Cost Share Grant Applications, providing crucial support for local fire departments. We’ll also share details about the 2025 Tree City USA Recognition event and introduce several new team members joining the Kansas Forest Service.

Thank you for joining us as we continue our work to support Kansas forests and communities!
Enjoy!
