A NEWSLETTER FROM NANCY ORLEN WEBER  VOLUME 32, JANUARY 14, 2025

As children, some of us were labeled as "too sensitive." Perhaps you've heard the phrase, "Stop crying," or, "You're overreacting." For those of us with heightened sensitivity, this criticism can feel like a rejection of who we are.

But what if that sensitivity is actually your superpower? Let me share how embracing my sensitivity—what some might have called my 'emotional baggage'—led to a profound transformation in my life, filling it with fulfillment and purpose.

The Princess and the Pea Syndrome

Do you remember the story of the Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Andersen? A prince's mother tested a young woman's claim to royalty by placing a pea under a stack of mattresses. Only an actual princess, it was said, would be so sensitive that she could feel the tiny pea.

As a child, I felt like that princess. Everything affected me deeply, and I was chastised for it. Yet, sensitivity has allowed me to connect with people and situations in ways others cannot.

For instance, in my work as a psychic detective, detectives who were initially skeptical of my abilities were astounded when I uncovered details no one else could have known. This gift came from embracing my sensitivity rather than suppressing it. It allowed me to tune in to the subtle signals most people overlook. In personal relationships, my sensitivity has helped me understand and empathize with others on a deeper level, fostering stronger connections.

Like the princess in the story, I saw my sensitivity not as a flaw but as a sign of something more profound. It's this empowering choice—whether to see our sensitivity as emotional baggage or as a gift—that defines whether it becomes the bully in our lives or our most remarkable success story.

Questions for Reflection:

When was the last time you felt "too sensitive"? What emotions came up, and how did you handle it?

How has sensitivity—either yours or someone else's—played a role in a success story in your life?

Do you see your sensitivity as a strength or a burden? Why?

Exercises to Empower Sensitivity:

The Pea Test:

Think of a recent moment when you felt overwhelmed or deeply affected. Write about what you noticed. Was it something others might have missed? Reflect on how your sensitivity helped you perceive this moment differently.

Sensitivity in Action:

Spend a day consciously paying attention to what your heightened awareness picks up—sounds, emotions, energies, or subtle environmental changes. Note how this sensitivity enriches your experience or helps you navigate situations.

Reframe the Narrative:

Write down three instances where you felt criticized or invalidated for being "too sensitive." Next to each, write how that sensitivity could be seen as a gift or strength.

Our emotional baggage doesn't have to define us negatively. If we embrace it, it can be the foundation of our greatest gifts. Like the princess who couldn't ignore the pea, your sensitivity signifies depth and awareness.

The world needs people who feel deeply and act with that awareness. So, what will you choose? Will your sensitivity be the "bully" that holds you back, or will it be the key to your success story?

I'd love to hear your reflections or stories of how sensitivity has shaped your life. Feel free to reply and share your journey! Your experiences can inspire others who are on a similar path.
