In the garden
01
I wanted to share a little about some of the “Cool Flowers” I am growing → cold hardy flowers that can be planted in the fall (and survive winter). Some seeds are sown directly into the soil, and others I grow as transplants. The directly sown seedlings are doing great so far and even survived their first snow. This year I am growing Bupleurum (pictured above), Orlaya, Bells of Ireland, Agrostemma, Cress, and Bachelor Buttons. I sowed these seeds directly into the garden in September and I overwinter them with row cover. This allows for earlier blooms and longer stems!
A little about me…
02
Hello friends! Since this is the first newsletter, I thought I would introduce myself for those of you I haven't had the pleasure of meeting. If I had to sum myself up, I'm a Jesus following, flower loving, chicken keeping, coffee drinking, farm raised woman who wears multiple hats – nurse, wife, and mama of two boys. My cup overflows. I'm so glad you're here, I hope to get to know you too!
Seed Starting
03
My seed starting for the year is well underway! Using a giant calendar and two grow shelves in my dining room, I start hundreds of flowers from seed using the soil blocking method (as opposed to plug trays). So far, I have started strawflower, eucalyptus, rudbeckia (little babies pictured above), craspedia, and bee balm seeds. I still plan to start multiple trays of snapdragons, one of my personal favorites (as you'll see below!)
Cool Flower Spotlight
04
Tis the season for cool flowers, and I thought it would be fun to share a favorite each month that I am growing. First up, snapdragons. I grew them for the first time last year and fell in love! They are a gorgeous, early spring, come-and-cut-again flower with an array of colors and a beautiful scent. I am growing multiple varieties and colors this year, with over a hundred already in the garden and plans to start seeds for at least a hundred more to be planted in February. There is nothing like an armful of gorgeous, early spring snaps! I can't wait to share them with you.
God's Word in the Garden
05
The garden is one of my favorite places to spend time with God, especially in the early morning light. As Joanna Gaines once said, “…I've learned to live outside of the garden from the moments I've spent in it.” Each month I hope to share something that I have learned from our Creator in the garden.

Luke 12:27-28 says, “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin…if that is how God clothes the grass of the field…how much more will He clothe you--you of little faith.”

Oh how often I am laboring and spinning. But the beauty and abundance God pours out on these flowers pales in comparison to the beauty and abundance He pours out on me through the love of my Savior, Jesus Christ. If you don't know Him, just ask me – I'd love to tell you what He has done for me.

I hope you enjoyed these 5 January tidbits, and I'm excited to share many more with you in the coming months. I would love to hear from you, questions and comments are welcome! As always, I'm so grateful for your support and am thankful we can enjoy a life made more beautiful by flowers.

With love—
Allison
