Issue #32 | January 20, 2025

Welcome back to Beyond the Tour where twice a month you'll receive practical tips and resources to help you get better at what you do. No fluff. All business.

Let's do this.

A special note this week for our friends in the Los Angeles area:

I am happy to offer consulting hours free of charge to help any of you think through issues related to admission and enrollment in light of the current situation - your timelines, communication with prospective families, current families, etc. etc. etc.

If it would be helpful to have dedicated office hours to connect people in a group, I am happy to do that, too. Just let me know.

We are here to help.
Free of charge. Full of love.

If You Do One Thing This Week:
📲 Do not be shy.
Remember, just as new families are applying to your school, your own families may be doing the same and looking elsewhere. Some other admission professional down the street is processing their application right now.

What do you do when you hear a family is thinking of leaving? PICK UP THE PHONE AND CALL THEM.
✔️ Show them love. Show them they matter.
✔️ Ask them what factors are at play in how they are thinking about school next year.
✔️ Can you help address their issues?  If so:
✔️ Help them see how your school is the right school for them.

This is not the time to give them space. Channel your inner fighting spirit and call them with clarity and confidence.

Let me know what happens.

2 Tips to DO MORE:
👏🏼 Engage your teachers.
If you're looking to widen your footprint to get your school name out in the community, ask teachers to post about your school on their social media and community listserves. They have networks that you want to reach! To get started, you can:
✔️ Send them an email with language ready to go for them to copy and paste;
✔️ Visit a staff meeting and remind them how they are part of the admission process;
✔️ Visit their individual offices or classrooms to connect with them.

Don't let Admission be an island. Connect with faculty and staff, and help them toss around love for the school like confetti.

🗓️ Synchronize your calendars
Be sure to send financial aid decisions at the same time as your decision letters. You cannot ask families to commit to your school without information about their financial commitment. Ideally, send the letters together. If you can't do that, send them within a few days of each other. Anything longer than that, you're losing a window for them to commit to you, and not to another school (who has already sent their financial aid decision.)

How to get started with this process?
Be sure to meet with your business office early and often to coordinate how to get everything done. Create a list of the components of the process and map out a timeline. Stick to it.  You got this.
