Escape The Crowds ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS FOR 2025 |
|
Hey First name / friend! I have been thinking about "overtourism" a lot lately. Especially after the one “fun” night we had in Saint Martin last month on our way to Anguilla. It is a balancing act, we all want to travel, I want YOU to travel, but how do we create a great experience without the crowds? And not be forced to visit in the dead of winter? Although personally I don't mind the Off-Off Season…sometimes. If you have not traveled since 2019, prepare to be shocked. The popular destinations can't make themselves any larger…but the crowds sure are. Lottery systems for hikes, fees and timed ticketed entries for once-free landmarks, dinner reservations that must be made well in advance…all on top of packed expensive flights. It’s no secret that some of the world’s most beloved destinations are feeling the strain—crowded streets, worn-down historical sites, and towns overwhelmed by cruise ship day-trippers. In response, places around the world are introducing visitor caps, reservation systems, and day trip fees ( Venice) to protect their beauty and culture. 👉 But here’s the thing: you don’t have to follow the crowds to experience somewhere extraordinary. The world is full of equally stunning alternatives—places where your visit can support lesser-known destinations while offering a richer, more personal experience. And honestly, who doesn’t want that? |

Europe Reimagined TRY THESE INSTEAD |
|
“I'm going to Europe!” says everyone and their brother… but nine times out of ten, they mean the most visited destinations in Europe. If you want to skip the crowds, try these overlooked gems instead ⤵️ 🇮🇹 Instead of the Amalfi Coast... consider the Douro Valley, Portugal - Rolling vineyards, charming riverfront villages, and stunning scenery without the traffic jams.
- Sip on world-renowned port wine, cruise along the Douro River, and explore the terraced landscapes.
- Stay at the Six Senses, one of my favorite hotels in the world right now
🏝️ Instead of Santorini... consider Naxos, Greece - Whitewashed charm, crystal-clear waters, and authentic Greek culture—without the cruise ship congestion.
- Wander the old town’s Venetian castle, relax on the golden sands of Agios Prokopios Beach, and explore ancient ruins like the Temple of Apollo.

Exotic Escapes FAR FLUNG WITHOUT THE CROWDS |
|
Despite being far-flung, some destinations are just popular enough to result in shoulder-to-shoulder, selfie-stick-wielding crowds. The good news? Sometimes you don't even need to choose a different country to do your part in battling overtourism—you simply need to go a bit further off the beaten path ⤵️ 🌄 Instead of Machu Picchu... consider Kuelap, Peru - Ancient, cloud-shrouded ruins often called the "Machu Picchu of the North."
- Explore pre-Incan fortresses, wander through misty cloud forests, and dive into Andean culture without the crowds.
🌅 Instead of Bali... consider Lombok, Indonesia - Bali’s quieter, equally beautiful neighbor with serene beaches and fewer tourists.
- Relax on the Pink Beach and explore the laid-back Gili Islands.
🌊 Instead of French Polynesia... consider the Seychelles - Pristine beaches, granite rock formations, and crystal-clear waters in the Indian Ocean.
- Snorkel in coral gardens, visit the UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai nature reserve, and stay in luxurious, eco-conscious beachfront villas.
