All the drama around social media apps and their tech execs has me wondering if I should go analog altogether. Building a brand without being reliant on paid media and at the mercy of tech overlords has always been top of mind but there's definitely a sense of urgency now to find other avenues to interact with our communities.
I don't have an answer but the idea of going completely off the grid and abandoning social media is very appealing to me. I wonder how much IRL interactions and relationships can be built without a social media presence.
I'm going to do some work to map out what this could look like but in the meantime, if you know of any brands or folks who've taken this road, do let me know. I'm curious on their approach to it all and building offline. 🤔
Reminder that our pop-up is this Saturday! I know it's been cold as hell this past week but if you're in the neighborhood, swing by and say hello!
We'll have some tequila on deck to keep you warm, thanks to our sponsor, Misguided Spirits, an employee-owned spirits company! 🍹🍹🍹
I was reading the inspiration behind the tequila and it's very much giving Lilith vibes—cheers to this queer icon!
Inspired by Chavela Vargas, the Costa Rican-born Mexican street singer who took over Mexico City’s bohemian club scene in the 1940’s. She challenged mainstream morals by dressing in men’s clothing and sang ranchero songs intended for men to woo women with incredible passion. The Black Dove (Paloma Negra), became one of Chavela’s most famous songs. It is the dramatized telling of a young woman who goes out partying all night and breaks the heart of the lovesick singer.

We need a class action suit against Beats and their Powerbeats headphones. I'm tired of one ear never holding a charge in the case. I was doing just fine with my preferred wired connection until y'all shamed me for it. Bring back audiojacks. 😭
Thailand’s marriage equality bill replaced the words “man & woman” and “husband & wife” with “individuals” & “marriage partners.” The bill is intended to grant full legal, financial and medical rights to LGBTQ+ couples. 🌈
Simone Rocha shares her favorite is In the Mood for Love and yes, absolutely! One of my favorites, too. Color grading is chef's kiss. Outfits, cinematography—might just be the perfect film. 10/10 recommend.
Near the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef, more than 40% of individual corals monitored have been bleached by heat stress and damaged by flesh-eating disease. 🪸🐠
Okay, so I definitely went down a rabbit hole after reading about Chavela Vargas—this track, Paloma Negra, is what inspired the tequila line above and it's not lost on me that alcohol contributed quite a bit to her downfall.
Born in Costa Rica, she moved to Mexico as a teenager where she started singing rancheras, a genre of traditional Mexican music (historically male-dominated) on street corners before she was scouted by fellow songwriter José Alfredo Jiménez. Vargas often “dressed like a man” wearing pants and ponchos and was well known for her affairs with Frida Kahlo and Ava Gardner. She publicly came out as a lesbian at the age of 81!
I also came across a documentary called Chavela which is streaming on Tubi (shoutout Tubi, always surprising me with film gems) that highlights the many ways Vargas was subversive: defying gender norms, living her best authentic, queer life without any labels, challenging the ways in which we view femininity, all while serenading folks with heart-wrenching love songs intended for her lovers and women. Certified lover girl for sure. 💘
