“Streaks!”- Habits and Priorities with a Modern Label
“Streaks” have many definitions. No, I’m not referring to ‘running naked in public to shock or amuse others,’ “a stubborn streak,’ or ‘a bold streak of color in your hair.’ Instead, I’m talking about streaks as the modern-day version of ‘a continuous period of specified success or luck.’ But streaks, as I see them, aren’t about luck—they’re about intentional habits, priorities, and perseverance.

Streaks are about more than just a winning streak or continuous performance. As noted, they are not about luck, nor are they simply about checking boxes. Streaks are about building habits, setting priorities, and sometimes pushing through challenges. They can keep motivation high and add an element of entertainment to our routines.

I first learned about “streaks” years ago from my sons and their interactions with friends on Snapchat. The idea intrigued me: this simple, modern label for habits and priorities we commit to every day. In this case, it was also a means of connection.

What’s your longest streak? What’s your oldest streak? These are fun questions to reflect on, and they offer a glimpse into what we value, how we prioritize, and how we stay motivated in our journey. Streaks can apply to many areas of life, including performance, relationships, and well-being.
I’ll share a few of my own streaks as they relate to health and well-being, using the principles of my AMPLIFY framework—Accountability, Mindset, Purpose, Leadership, Innovation, Family, and You (self-care).
Streaks help us build accountability by encouraging consistency. For example, brushing your teeth might seem mundane, but it’s a streak most of us started in childhood and never questioned. Similarly, my Duolingo streak has become a daily practice. Over 2.5 years—970 days later—it’s a testament to how small, consistent actions lead to progress. What I appreciate most is the flexibility—like Duolingo’s streak freeze—reminding me that accountability can coexist with grace.
Streaks shape our mindset by reinforcing growth and resilience. I’ve incorporated mental fitness into my streaks, using daily focus messages and Positive Intelligence (PQ) reps to stay grounded and resilient. These small moments energize me at the beginning of the day and sustain me throughout, helping me approach challenges with clarity and positivity.

They also reflect our purpose and planning when they align with our values and goals. One of my longest streaks—outside of brushing my teeth—began in 2017 with my Apple Watch. Closing my rings daily became a commitment to health and well-being. The minimum metrics—20+ minutes of exercise, 400-500 calories burned, and movement for at least 12 hours—shaped my lifestyle.
The first time I missed closing one of the three rings, I was disappointed, but it was great to remind me: don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good. Seven years later, closing my rings isn’t just about streaks—it’s about my commitment to health and well-being. It’s a habit that keeps me motivated and accountable to myself.

Streaks require leadership in adapting to challenges and modeling resilience. Running has always been a source of joy, stress release, and clarity for me, but injuries forced me to reevaluate my approach. For a while, I shifted to walking three miles a day, but I missed the exhilaration of running. Eventually, I committed to a minimum of one mile a day as a way to transition back to running. This smaller goal became a sustainable streak I’ve maintained, and often exceeded, for the last year.
Much like Duolingo’s streak freeze, I learned to balance commitment with flexibility. When I missed three days due to illness, I didn’t give up; I got back on track. This streak has shown me that setting realistic goals and adapting to life’s circumstances can help us keep doing what we love.

Adapting streaks requires innovation and staying true to our values. When I adjusted my running routine to shorter distances, I found a way to maintain my integrity in the habit without compromising my well-being. By rethinking the “how” while staying true to the “why,” I found a sustainable way to honor my priorities. It’s a reminder that streaks are tools, not constraints—meant to serve us, not the other way around.

Streaks also foster family connections and shared experiences. My sons’ introduction to the idea of streaks through their Snapchat interactions showed how these commitments can connect us to others and the fun and camaraderie these commitments can bring. Whether it’s a shared challenge or simply cheering each other on, streaks can be a meaningful way to strengthen bonds and create lasting memories.

Finally, streaks emphasize you and the importance of self-care. Even imperfect streaks, like my love for Timehop, Wordle games, and daily reading, enrich my life by sparking memories, variety, challenge, fun, and joy. They’re another reminder that streaks don’t have to be about perfection—they’re about the importance of self-care, flexibility, grace, and finding what works while inspiring us along our journey.
