ISSUE #10 | January 27, 2025

Hey, it's Miriam.

Welcome back to the At Work Tune Up, your insider’s playbook with practical, quick tips on how to improve your team dynamics, keeping things healthy and productive at work.

We spend a lot of time at work. We should love what we do.

This week's tip for your toolbox:
Get better at hiring.
If you're looking to hire people who will love their work and stay around longer, move away from the traditional post-and-pray model.
⭕ Stop recycling job descriptions that haven't found you the right candidates;
⭕ Stop asking traditional interview questions.

🟢 Start asking questions that reflect what the work really is about.
🟢 Mine for what you need to know for this person to be successful at your company.

The most important universal values for successful employees are:
▶️ Humble
▶️ Hungry
▶️ Smart

Look for these attributes along with your core values, and you will have a better shot at successful, long-term employment.

How do we get started? Keep reading ⬇️

Get to work:
✔️ Go back to your core company values. Integrate them into interview questions.  (And if you don't know what your company values are, use this document to help you figure it out.)
✔️ Rewrite job desctiptions with those values in mind and on paper.
✔️ Introduce interview questions that get at how the applicant will show up to work.

Will they be on board with your values? Are they humble, hungry and smart?

▶️ Use this interview guide to help you generate new interview practices to hire the ideal team player.

Insight - What experts are saying
Listen to The Table Group team discuss how to approach hiring. Here's a summary of the podcast, if you'd like to read it through. I come back to the these principles around hiring over and over again when helping groups figure out how to add the best members to their teams.

It's worth the listen.
