building a love of nature

Children from the Emgwenya Mountain Club have long been pleading to camp at Tranquilitas. In consultation with the MCSA Jhb (and weather forecasters!), the camp was scheduled for 5-6 December. Preparations were an educational experience, with the children having to plan the menu, calculate food quantities for 13 participants and shop for cheaper (and healthy!) options at the local U-Save and butchery.

With full-on support from Roc ‘n Rope Adventures – which managed all logistics and provided gear for camping, cooking, climbing and transport, we arrived at Tranquilitas on a sunny Thursday morning. After pitching camp and enjoying a refreshing swim, everyone headed to Hallucinogen crag for an afternoon of climbing. A braai at the Tranquilitas hall, set against a dramatic thunderstorm backdrop, added excitement to the evening.

The next two days were filled with fun and adventure: climbing at Pandemic and Theatre crags, bouldering and swimming at the pool, a starlit evening braai complete with marshmallow roasting and a final misty morning of climbing at the Creche before packing up and heading home.

Said one of the moms about her son after the trip, “he has not stopped talking my ears off... thank you all so much for the great camp that you guys did and all the hard work and effort. It is so great to hear about all the fun stuff they did and the confidence that he is getting.”

While the trip was planned around climbing, its bigger purpose was to help grow a love of the outdoors and environmental stewardship. The importance of this was emphasized by Morris (who helped found the Club) who said that many parents are opposed to their children going climbing, hiking and camping because they fear snakes. Trips like this are opportunity to challenge these fears by showing nature as a space of fun and wonder, not fear.

Special thanks to Alex and Gus from Roc ‘n Rope Adventures for everything you do for the Emgwenya Mountain Club; Ruth from Tranquilitas for offering us discounted rates; Saray, Paul and Bennie from the MCSA-Jhb for your support, including covering camping, permit, transport and catering costs; and Morris as well as Themba, Nathi and Nkosinathi for championing the trip and supervising the children.
