Hi Friends! Today, I’m bouncing between studio time and computer work. (Studio update: not going as planned! I thought I had some focal elements figured out, I built a background—only to realize they don’t work together. So now I have two art quilts in progress instead of one. Not the direction I expected, but maybe not so bad after all. 😵‍💫)

Today I'm sharing inspiration from something simple yet iconic—notebook paper! Those evenly spaced light blue lines and that single vertical red margin line are instantly recognizable and full of creative possibilities.

I’m also excited to share updates on upcoming special events, a few recommendations, and some awards I’m honored to have received. Thanks for reading, for your support, and for being part of this creative journey. I appreciate you so much!

  1. Embroidery I've followed artist Candace Hicks for years. Her series of embroidered notebook papers where the lines curve, loop, and distort is astrounding. The series is titled “Notes for String Theory.” I love that she continues to manipulate and develop this concept – and yet they still look like classic notebook papers. I have some designs I like to return to over and over. Maybe I should do that even more.
  2. Suit I happened upon designer Charlie Ryan and am entranced by his “notebook suit” which has pink lining like a rubber eraser. He is stretching the possibilities of garment construction and includes so many cheeky details. I especially love that some of the best details may not even be noticed by the viewer – but he still includes them.
  3. Wild Life This stunning video is a combination of animation, origami, and engineering. It's an inspiring reminder of the importance of wildlife conservation. Plus, it's a celebration of notebook paper! I love the fish swerving to avoid the trash can full of paper even though it's a harsh reminder of how waste and inattention damage our environment. It's inspiring me to think of new ways to use what could be consider waste in my creative process.

See you at QuiltCon next week!
I am THRILLED to have two quilts at QuiltCon this year. (My first time juried into this show!) Unbothered (pictured on the left) will be in the Small Quilts category. Scattered Thoughts (detail pictured on the right) will be in the Improvisation category. I'll be in Phoenix on February 21, 22 and 23! Please say hi! I've got stickers to swap and share.

Sisters, Oregon Workshops in July!
Exciting news! I’m teaching four classes at Quilters Affair in beautiful Sisters, OR this July 7 to 11! Two are already sold out (thank you!!) but there’s still room in Landscape Diptychs and Fabric Collage Bouquets —both packed with creative exploration, texture, and color. Quilters Affair is an incredible event, set against a backdrop of pine trees and mountains, where you’re surrounded by artistic visionaries and kindred spirits. It's not too late to plan a trip! I'd love to see you there!

Highlights & Recommendations
  • This seven-minute video compilation of 50 years of music on Saturday Night Live is brilliant!
  • I'm very proud that SAQA pulled the entire Color in Context: Red exhibition from the QuiltWeek show when AQS wanted to censor two of the art quilts in the collection. Read the SAQA statement here.
  • I generally eat a simple lunch here at home – and it needed a little life and color. These beautiful block printed cloth napkins did the trick!
  • My etsy shop is stocked with my book, creative voice workbook, and original art. 😉
  • I loved the novel Sandwich. If you're Gen X like me, it may hit the sweet spot for you too. It includes mention of this classic podcast story! 🐷
  • TextileArtist.org highlighted my book in this collection of textile art book recommendations.
  • I'm honored that my application to be a Studio Art Quilt Associates Juried Artist Member was approved.

Visual Arts League of Lewisville Award
My art quilt collage, Uncultivated, was honored with a 3rd place award at the Strictly Abstract exhibition hosted by the Visual Art League of Lewisville, TX! There were 100 pieces of art by 60 different artists in the exhibition including painting, mixed media, photography, drawing, sculpture and fiber! It’s especially exciting to be honored in an all-media show. (Do you live near Lewisville, TX? VAL is an amazing organization. You should join!)

Usually this newsletter focuses on my creative life, but I'm compelled to share one news story that I find horrifically distressing. The shutting down of USAID is tragic and immoral. I pray their life-saving work of delivering food and medicine to those most in need will resume soon. I support Partners In Heath and their belief that “all human lives have the same value, and every human being has the inalienable right to be healthy to fulfill their potential.”

Use the code NOTEBOOK15 for 15% off anything in my Etsy shop through March 1.
Have you seen a cool piece of art inspired by notebook paper? Or clothing? A poem? A short video? A story? Tell me about it.
