Hi First name / friend, Happy Valentine's Day! I've actually never really been the romantic type (type - was that a design pun?). My partner and I actually forgot our 9-year anniversary last week, oops! Safe to say, I'm much better at design than keeping track of relationship milestonesâŠ
Question for this week: If you were to marry a design tool, which one would it be? I think mine might have to be the Image Trace tool, it just never let's me down. Let me know yours!
Also I just wanted to say thanks for those that came to the Design Prom online event this week, it was great to be there and do a live Q&A all about social media success, thanks for joining!
Right, let's dive into this week's design content. |

Vintage Paper Textures Oh boy, you'd thought I'd got tired of paper textures? Well no, no I haven't. I just came across a vintage paper pack of 8 great textures to use in your designs. I love bringing the opacity down when using them, so it is only a very subtle texture. It really does add a little bit of personality to your illustrations if they are feeling a little flat.
You can use them across Photoshop, Illustrator or any other design app you use. This is just the free sample pack but I see they also offer a larger selection for a small fee. |

10 Design Client Red Flags Ever had a client give you that uh-oh feeling? Design Week asked ten industry pros to share their biggest client red flags, and the answers are all too relatable. From endless revisions to âwe have no budget, but this will be great exposure,â these warning signs can save you from a nightmare project. Some are classic - like vague briefs and unpaid test work, while others are sneakier, like clients who donât respect boundaries or expect instant responses at all hours. One even warns about the dreaded âdesign by committeeâ situation (yikes). My LEAST favourite by far. If youâve ever dealt with a tricky client or want to avoid one in the future, this is a must-read. Check out the full article to see all ten red flags - plus some expert advice on how to handle them. |

A New Identity for Roald Dahl One my my biggest childhood memories was falling asleep every night to Roald Dahl audiobooks. I was truly obsessed with the wild stories about James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, Matilda, the BFG, the list goes on and on.
To my joy this week I saw none other than Pentagram have rebranded The Roald Dahl brand (now owned by Netflix), with some serious funky type - aptly named Fantastic Mr Font. Whoever came up with that name, bravo.
I'm so glad they are still using the wonderful Quentin Blake's illustrations, they really fill me with such nostalgia. Go take a look and let me know what is your favourite story by Roald Dahl, I'm not sure I could choose myself! |

Animography - Animate Your Type Ever wanted to create beautiful type animations but you just don't have the time, funds to pay someone, or the knowledge to do it? Well, I'm basically all 3 of those.
However, Animography might just be my animation best friend now. They sell a range of animation type templates that you can open up in After Effects and with just a few very small tweaks, you can have your lettering animated in a matter of seconds.
I've used them in YouTube video titles I've done in the past and always been super impressed with how they look. |

How to Design a Book Cover I came across this creator this week and was kicking myself with how simple and effective his content is at showing off his design work and multiple ideas.
This video showcases all the different ways you can answer a design brief, and that there are multiple ways to go about it. Not much more to say but go take a watch and feel inspired. |
