Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome, Fellow Lawn Addicts to another installment of “The Fulcrum”.
This week we have another Frequently Asked Questions.

My lawn is not looking as good; what could be the cause?
At this time of year, heat stress is the most common issue, especially after the holidays and back-to-school period. Regular use of a wetting agent can help improve water infiltration and prevent runoff. However, if you're in Queensland and have experienced heavy rain or flooding, the combination of moisture and warm temperatures could be creating conditions for lawn diseases to develop.

Can I use PGR after a renovation/height of cut reset?
No, it's best to wait until your lawn has fully recovered and filled in before applying a plant growth regulator (PGR). Using PGRs too soon can slow growth and hinder recovery. Products like trinexapac-ethyl (e.g., Primo Maxx and Astro) work by inhibiting gibberellic acid production, which reduces vertical growth. While this can lead to a denser, more compact lawn, it’s important to allow full regrowth before applying.

As you can see (picture 1), a tired and dishevelled lawn, with just Kelpro, Hydrolink, granular, and regular mowing, can bounce back in no time at all.
Is it too late to do a Mini-renovation? (on my warm-season grass)
No, it's not too late, especially with the current weather conditions. Soil temperatures are still warm enough, and mid-February is generally a good window for a mini-renovation. With proper timing and the right products, your lawn should recover well in time for mid-to-late autumn and into winter. Just like in spring, ensuring the soil temperature is suitable is key to a successful renovation.

Can I oversow my cool-season lawn now?
It depends. The most important factor for successful seed establishment is keeping the soil consistently moist. If you can maintain adequate moisture throughout the day, then yes, you can oversow now. However, if keeping the soil damp is challenging, it may be better to wait until daytime temperatures drop slightly while still retaining enough warmth in the soil to support germination.
