Nestled in trees at the base of the mountain range, Foothold offers amazing hiking trails, stunning scenery, bird watching and accommodation on site. Trail options to the Magaliesberg escarpment include Chain Ladder and Footloose Gully as well as trails closer to the base for less strenuous hiking and nature walks.

BEGINNER KLOOFING | UPPER TONQUANI
By Kat Draxl

Despite the rainy weather, we still managed to gather six intrepid 'beginner' kloofers for our meet, alongside Andreas and myself. But our number suddenly grew as we met up with another unofficial MCSA group at the parking whose intention it seemed was to spend the day getting lost in the area. We travelled together for a while, parting ways at Kitchen Gully, where they continued on their own adventure.

It was at this point we had to unfortunately leave two of our group behind.  Conditions thus far had proved to be slightly too challenging, and we advised them to turn back while it was still safe to do so. Jenine took a big one for the team and kindly escorted the pair safely back to their cars. Thank you Jenine!

The rest of us continued down the kloof as planned. I've never seen Tonquani so full of water! It was almost entirely swimmable, and the water temperature was perfect, making it a delightful experience. Everyone in our group bravely jumped into Help-Help Pool, eliminating the need for any rope setups. From then on, it was relatively smooth sailing, even with the massive downpour that hit us halfway through. We exited up Boulder Kloof, which was also full of water due to the rain, making for a particularly spectacular experience.

On our way back, we saw some of the excellent work done by the conservation team, with piles of Crofton successfully removed. Back at the car, we changed into fresh clothes and got dry for the first time since we arrived. Thank you to all the wonderful souls who joined us. What an awesome group of people!
