If you’ve been feeling a little lonely or isolated and aren’t sure who your people are, that’s okay too. It sometimes takes courage to reach out and forge a connection. It might feel impossible, especially during a busy semester.
So, let me remind you to find moments to foster meaningful connections. Say hello to the student sitting next to you in class and ask how their day is going. If your roommates are going to lunch, join them! Even small conversations in passing can make you feel part of something bigger.
Here are a few ideas for creating meaningful connections:
- Instead of trying to be friends with everyone, focus on a few meaningful relationships. Deep connections matter more than a large social circle.
- Schedule regular hangouts, study sessions, or meal times with friends.
- Join a club or organization that aligns with your interests.
- Put your phone away when talking to someone.
- Practice active listening—show genuine interest in what others say.
- Join volunteer groups or attend campus events where you can meet like-minded individuals.
- Check in on friends, especially during stressful times like exams.
Don’t let busyness be an excuse. Even dedicating 15 to 30 minutes a day to socializing can help. Plus, when you log into our 365 Mindful Days community and respond to a post, you are building connections with fellow TRIO/McNair students across the country.
That’s a special thing!
Prioritize your people. We need each other. Meaningful connections are what make life truly grand. ✨
