"We do not see the world as it is, but as we are."
— Stephen R. Covey
Last weekend, I came across a thought-provoking column that shared an old folktale about a dog barking at a snake to protect its home. The helpless owner witnessing the scene from inside the house, fearing for the life of her dog, was advised not to interfere. As doing so might cause the dog to lose its focus and that would then give the snake a chance to strike.
This image resonated deeply with me where I was reading it on my plane ride to Cape Town. The world seems crazier than ever. Every day seems to bring something weirder than the day before. In many ways, I feel like the owner of that dog, watching helplessly as events unfold around me. I must constantly remind myself that while I may feel powerless in the face of external challenges and uncertainties, the key lies in recognising and remembering what I can control:
- my emotions,
- reactions,
- and the design of my personal environments.
This perspective is crucial as we embark on the journey of transforming our living spaces. By consciously choosing how we think and feel, we can shape our environments to reflect our true selves and aspirations. Every design choice we make is an extension of our inner world, allowing us to create a sanctuary that nurtures our spirit.
Here are some practical steps I apply to my own life to cultivate a sense of control over our feelings and surroundings:
Practice Mindfulness: Take a few moments each day to breathe deeply and acknowledge your emotions without judgment.
Design Your Space: Focus on creating an environment that reflects your values and aspirations. Surround yourself with elements that inspire positivity.
Set Intentions: Begin each day by setting clear intentions for how you want to feel and respond to challenges.
As we navigate our realities, remember to let go of what we cannot control and embrace the power we have over our emotions and our spaces. Together, we can create environments that nurture our well-being and reflect our true selves.
