I used to kick myself for not trusting my intuition. Does that sound familiar? Maybe you’ve had a moment when you knew something, yet you went ahead and stepped right into a situation that led to hurt or regret.
Actually, that frustration is a gift. It pushes us to reconsider and ask why we keep repeating this. The first step is deciding to change it—not if you can, but simple to do it.
When I was most frustrated, I would forget the things that truly mattered. I’d get caught up in everyday annoyances—a slow traffic light, an unwanted phone call, a draining relationship. I’d feel it all tightening, a ball of frustration growing deeper.
The best thing I ever did was pause. I shut everything down—the noise, the distractions, the expectations. I focused only on my breath.
At first, it felt forced. So, I placed my hands on my belly and imagined inflating a balloon inside—not in my chest, but deep in my core. That got boring quickly, so I let my mind add color, turning the breath into a stream of light. Then, I started listening to the sound within. Was that music? Where does sound originate?
Curiosity replaced frustration. The more I explored the inner world, the quieter my mind became.
I never called it meditation. That word had too much baggage back then. I simply called it paying attention. It took time to break through my own resistance and accept that thoughts—no matter how dark or intrusive—were just thoughts. They didn’t define me. They weren’t in control.
That’s when I discovered something important: Thoughts lose power when you don’t cling to them. Anger reshapes itself when you observe it. I learned to tell the difference between righteous anger, which comes from deep knowing and a sense of justice, and mean anger, which comes from pain or fear and often leads to regrettable actions.
This journey of self-discovery and the techniques I developed became the foundation of my book, Soul Detective: How to Solve the Inner Mystery of You. Each insight and exercise I share in the book arose from real-life moments of struggle—just like the ones I describe here. It’s all about uncovering your uplifting soul in the present moment and recognizing your own power to shift from frustration to clarity. This journey, which started with frustration, has now become a source of inspiration and hope for me, and I hope it does the same for you.
What Does This Mean for You?
If you’ve ever regretted ignoring your intuition, you’re not alone. The good news? You can strengthen it.
Learning to pause and observe your thoughts instead of reacting to them allows insight to emerge.
By shifting from hindsight (I should have known!) to foresight (I will trust myself next time), you reach insight—the ability to navigate life with clarity and confidence. Hindsight is the understanding of a situation or event after it has happened, foresight is the ability to predict or anticipate future events, and insight is the deep understanding that comes from self-awareness and mindfulness.
I also encourage you to explore my book, Soul Detective: How to Solve the Inner Mystery of You, where I share the path that led me to develop the techniques that help uncover intuitive wisdom and self-trust.
An Exercise to Foster Being Present
Try this:
Find a quiet place and sit comfortably.
Place your hands on your belly and take a slow, deep breath. Imagine a balloon inflating inside.
Exhale just as slowly, feeling the balloon deflate.
Add color—what color is your breath? Let it shift and change.
Listen. Is there a sound within? What does the rhythm of your breath feel like?
If thoughts arise, label them as thoughts, then return to your breath.
The more you do this, the easier it becomes to recognize when your insight is speaking—so you don’t have to learn the hard way next time.
Final Thought
Which do you rely on most—hindsight, foresight, or insight? And how might shifting your awareness help you trust yourself more thoroughly?
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Your experiences and insights are valuable, and I believe they can contribute to our shared journey of self-discovery. Hit reply and let me know!
With curiosity and clarity,
Nancy
