Friends—

I'm convinced Democrats have a humiliation kink because what the hell was this! Protesting fascism with little auction paddles and pink pantsuits. And to add insult to injury, they sang “We Shall Overcome” in response to Al Green's censure after he interrupted Trump's speech. When I saw his cane, I really thought some Charles Sumner shit was about to go down!

I mean I shouldn't be surprised—this was brought to us by the same Democrats wearing Kente cloth (!) while kneeling for George Floyd.

A wholly embarrassing and unserious group of individuals.

brand highlight—

I came across this brand while I was scrolling on Instagram and fell in love—the texture, colors, and glaze! The pieces look as though they were dropped in the ocean, only to emerge in pretty colors, covered in barnacles.

Claire will be vending at Normal NYC next weekend. Go see her wonky wares in-person!

WE'RE READIng—

This #longread follows archaeologist, Laura Ng, who specializes in the study of late 19th and early 20th century Chinese migration to the United States. Ng is leading the excavation of a historical Chinatown, located in the old mining town of Rocks Spring, Wyoming, where Chinese immigrants found work as tracklayers and miners for the Union Pacific Railroad. Since the trains needed fuel, coal mining quickly became one of the region’s most important industries.

Though by 1885, Chinese immigrants were brutally massacred by white miners—fueled by anti-Chinese sentiment and labor disputes. At least 28 Chinese residents were murdered as white miners burned down Rock Spring's Chinatown, while others were forced to flee.

2 years later, Chinese survivors of the massacre continued to work for Union Pacific in Rock Springs, this time guarded by federal troops, while the company rebuilt the Chinese quarter. The extent of the atrocities faced by Chinese migrants is still unknown but Laura Ng's excavation projects hope to shed light on a community who built a life and community in rural mining towns.

Excavations sites in Wyoming have shown that the Chinese migrants grew crops including carrots, gooseberries, eggplant, and pumpkin, and raised chickens, pigs, and goats; some folks even had horses.
