MCSA Jhb is committed to fostering a love for nature and the outdoors through our Community Program, which reaches a diverse group of youth, primarily from disadvantaged backgrounds. This initiative provides young people with the opportunity to experience the beauty of nature, develop outdoor skills, and explore the mountains in ways that were previously out of reach. Our mission is to build the next generation of mountain stewards—individuals who will explore, discover, connect with, and ultimately protect the natural world that we cherish.
Expanding Access to the Wilderness
For many communities, historical and socio-economic barriers have limited access to wilderness areas and outdoor recreation. Through partnerships with club properties, government reserves, and private landowners, we are breaking down these barriers and making the outdoors more accessible. We aim to develop confident and independent hikers, whilst also identifying and nurturing those with a keen interest in mountaineering and climbing—whether as a sport, a lifelong passion, or even a professional career path.
Hands-On Learning
Every month, a team of 7 to 15 dedicated MCSA Johannesburg volunteers host outdoor excursions for between 35 to 50 participants, ranging from ages 13 to 30. These experiences are far more than just hikes—they are structured, hands-on learning opportunities covering a wide range of outdoor skills, including:
- Hiking and Navigation – Understanding trails, safety, and how to navigate diverse terrain.
- Rock Climbing Basics – Introduction to climbing techniques, equipment, and safety.
- Wilderness First Aid – Emergency preparedness and basic first aid training.
- Leadership & Teamwork – Fostering problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Environmental Conservation – Educating participants on the importance of protecting natural habitats, identifying local flora and fauna, and sustainable outdoor practices.
Creating Outdoor Leaders
One of the most rewarding aspects of the program is seeing participants evolve from learners into leaders and mentors within their communities. Many who start as first-time hikers or climbers go on to become hiking guides, form local hiking groups, or give back by volunteering within the program. This cycle of empowerment ensures that the impact of our work extends beyond our Club and into the communities we serve.
