Hide Club: FOUNDATIONS 2025 |
|
Hello Hide Club It's Week 6 + tomorrow is Session 8 of Hide Club. We've got a lot going on. :) (1) 🦌 Deer Hide - By now, if you are following along live, your deer hide has been opened up, dried + dry-scraped.
- It's now time to take the hide out of the frame, if your sheepskin leather is ready
- → We'll swap the sheepskin leather for the deer hide in tomorrow's live session
- → If your sheepskin leather isn't ready, you can keep the deer hide in the frame until you're ready to smoke
- → Check out a video on de-framing hides here.
- Next steps: the next step for our deer hide is smoking. You'll receive a pre-recorded video on smoking by end of day Friday March 14. We'll have a check-in on smoking at next Thursday's live session, March 20.
(2) 🐑 Sheepskin Leather - By now, your sheep skin may or may not be completed sheepskin leather
- Do the cut-off test to see if it's absorbed tannins thru + thru yet
- → Find info for the cut-off test here
- If it is, take the sheepskin leather out + hang on a fence or your scraping beam, and rinse the wool thoroughly with water to remove un-absorbed tannins
- Let the sheepskin continue hanging until our live session. In my climate in the winter, I can have sheepskin leather hanging around for days before it needs to be framed.
- Next steps: we will frame the sheepskin leather together in our live call + begin the drying process, which will include making our final fat emulsion.
- It will take several days for your sheepskin to dry. This is good. Keep the work slow + steady; check on the hide periodically as it dries, when you have time.
- Once the sheepskin leather fully dries, we can comb. A pre-recorded video on combing will be dropped in the online space for this.
- You can keep the sheepskin in its frame indefinitely. We will not need our frames for buckskin again.
See you tomorrow @ 4:30pm PT |

More Hide Club?! The next cohort of Hide Club will be May-June, 2025. It is Hide Club: SPECIALIZED, where we dive deeper into theory + complexity. And we focus attention on one method each cohort to explore it from many angles (ie different linear steps, different species, same method). |

Zoom Link Below is our Zoom link for all live sessions. You can also access it in our online space. |

WhatsApp Group Chat If you haven't yet joined the group chat, you are welcome to (and it's not required). The group chat is a way for us to chat hide stuff + troubleshoot in real time. You can also ask questions via email. {Join here!} Some etiquette basics for the group chat: - Stick with questions + topics relevant to our hidework in this Foundations season
- Post in the group chat only; do not unconsensually DM people in the group chat (including Mara!)
- As always, respect others individually and culturally

Thank you very much for joining this program, for the trust you're putting in me as your facilitator, and for dedicating a part of your life to the hides. Mara |
