NEW LIFE FROM DRY BONES
Cultivating life and beauty in relationship. written by Kimberly Neal
One of my favorite seasons: HELLO SPRING! I love the thought of what was once dormant now springing back to life. Although I prefer the warmth over the cold months, I'll take a quiet crisp morning and sweet birds chirping everyday. Nothing better than the start of a new day in the newness of a season in full bloom. As a floral artist, spring is truly my playground.
Aside from all the beautiful things blooming, this particular season reminds me of some of my most cherished friendships, including a few that did not last. To my resilient friends that know me well, you know I love to laugh at silly things, share deep ideas or stories, design on all levels, learn something at anytime, challenge foundational growth, have breakfast at any time of the day, and am guilty of wanting to do all of this at once! I’m so serious- I know, I’m working on it.
Over the years, and with certain experiences outside of my control, I learned that friends also come in the form of seasons too. Some die off as they were not in good soil to survive the change in climate. Others enjoy growing and we force inner-growth collectively as we take part in the pruning process for one another, making room for what is to take root. Lastly, there are those that can truly give you life with their gracious love, intent, inspiration and motivation. They expect nothing in return as they have a deep life-giving well to draw from.
I truly believe we are designed for relationships and are meant to play a role in other lives, and to be a gift to one another if we are willing to receive it. You may or may not like the gift that is given in a particular friendship, but it is a gift - so we must pay attention. What type of gift you may wonder? Well, maybe a gift to know when to walk away, or how to be loved. Possibly the gift of grace through honesty that is like refreshing water.

I truly believe we are designed for relationships and are meant to play a role in other lives. Moreover, be a gift to one another if we are willing to receive it. Well, maybe a gift to know when to walk away, or how to be loved. Possibly, the gift of grace through honesty that is like refreshing water. The gift of courage, companionship, growth, peace, comfort, rest, joy or even the opposite experience of each of these words so you are fully aware of what would be wise to lean into in a friend.
The gift of courage, companionship, growth, peace, comfort, rest, joy, or even the opposite experience of each of these words so you are fully aware of what would be wise to lean into in a friend.
I do have my share of experiences with each of these types of friendships, and knowing my role in all of them, I had what Oprah calls an "Ah-ha!" moment. Being one that loves intention, I felt the need to make a commitment to myself. I never want to be a friend that carries resentment, hate, jealousy, or comparison. This, in my opinion, breeds death in all relationships- even if these feelings are rooted from the experiences of one friendship. It’s similar to holding poison within your being - slowly removing the ability to fully be well in your soul.
My desire is to breed life to dry bones in my friendships, knowing we all have bones that need life. I want to make myself available to meet my friends where they are, and walk beside them. After many wounds and brokenness, I believe we have so much to live for and celebrate in this life. Although there are losses to grieve over, we simply can't stay there; we must look at what's blooming in front of us, make the choice take in the fresh crisp air, and lean into one another - this is a must for me.
How about you? Are you giving life to dry bones in your friendships, or is someone sucking you dry? Let’s use this season to foster life in one another. Let’s look at the soil we have planted our minds and hearts in so we can breed life-giving thoughts. Let's love in order to fill the wells in our souls so that we can give. We know we have many seasons ahead, and there are people awaiting our gift.
Please join us and continue the rewritten conversation in our floral class, our Mastermind group on April 26th, or our Rewritten Motherhood Brunch on May 10th!
