May is a month where local folklore is abundant

May Day, or Beltane, is a celebration rooted in Pagan tradition, still honoured in many communities across the country. The festivities feature time-honoured customs like Maypoles, flower-adorned girls, Morris dancers, Green Man imagery, hobby horses, and more. As we welcome the promise of sunshine and summer, we are greeted by the green shoots of new life and the abundant blossom of nature, especially the Mayflower (Hawthorn), which brings to mind the old saying: "Ne’er cast a clout till May be out..." Something our parents used to say, meaning 'don't be rash with removing the winter clothing until the month of May has ended'.

If you’re seeking a serene and private bluebell experience with friends or colleagues, now’s the time to act! The bluebells are absolutely stunning at the Harry Edwards Foundation right now, and due to nature’s unpredictability, we can’t always anticipate when they’ll be in full bloom. We may still be able to arrange a private session this month, but spaces are limited. Our public event on Sunday 27th April still has availability, and we hope our Saturday 17th May session will offer a final glimpse of the bluebells, as thousands are still in bloom on the site.
May is thought to be named after Maia, the Greek goddess associated with the land, fertility, and growth. For the Anglo-Saxons, it was known as Thrimilci, the month when cows could be milked three times a day, thanks to the constant grazing on the lush, new grass.

In modern Celtic tradition, May marks the transition between the fifth and sixth moon months of the Celtic calendar. The Willow Moon spans from 15th April to 12th May, while the Hawthorn Moon runs from 13th May to 9th June.

The Celts referred to the Willow Moon as Saille (pronounced Sahl-yeh), a month closely associated with healing and growth. During this time, Europeans can expect the optimal conditions for the healthy growth of willow trees—namely, plenty of rain! Willows planted near homes are believed to offer protection from flooding, storms, and other natural disasters, even warding off various threats. This may explain why willows are often found in cemeteries.

Recent studies have shown that trees, in general, can absorb up to 70 times the amount of water that grass can, making them an essential part of any flood prevention strategy. Willow Moon is the perfect time to focus on healing rituals, deepening esoteric knowledge, exploring women’s mysteries (and for some of us, there’s still much to uncover!), and nurturing both yourself and others.

The Hawthorn Moon comes soon after Beltane. and was known as Huath (pronounced Hoh-uh). The plant is prickly with pretty blossoms and is associated with masculine energy, fire and fertility; tradition dictating that male potency is high at this time of year.  Hawthorn can be used for magic rituals involving masculine power (it has a raw phallic energy about it), making professional connections and business decisions. The faerie realm are said to like it, with the fae being particularly attracted when Hawthorns grow together with Ash and Oak.

Encounters with Wildlife - White Stag
On Easter Sunday, whilst returning from a modern stone circle, we were blessed with an incredible sight: a majestic white stag accompanied by two younger white deer. This rare encounter was truly magical, a moment of pure connection with nature. We felt as if our efforts to support nature and the land were being confirmed.

White deer can occur in any breed of deer, due to low production of melanin, but most commonly in Fallow deer, which are not albinos. True albinos have pink eyes and no pigmentation, but we weren't close enough to see the pink, or otherwise , of their eyes!

White Stags have long been revered in mythology and folklore across many cultures. In Celtic traditions, the white stag is often seen as a messenger or guide, leading individuals on journeys of self-discovery, new beginnings or enlightenment, making it a symbol of the pursuit of truth. In this tradition, drinking water in which a white deer has bathed  has the reputation of healing properties for all illnesses.

Symbolically, the white stag embodies purity, renewal, and the power of transformation. Its white coat signifies a fresh start, a blank canvas on which new possibilities can be written. Encountering a white stag is a rare blessing, reminding us to stay open to the messages of the universe, and to embrace the spiritual wisdom that is offered at pivotal moments in our lives.

Harmony in Nature Events- Surrey & London - What to Expect

Experience the Restorative Power of the Natural World
Join us for a gentle woodland walk, immersing yourself in nature's seasonal beauty. Each session is unique, inviting you to slow down and engage with the sights, scents, and sounds of the forest. You may notice the intricate patterns of leaves, the earthy aroma of the woodland floor, or the gentle rustling of the trees. Our time together concludes with a Treelaxation—a deeply calming meditation beneath the canopy—followed by an optional woodland tea. We aim for you to leave feeling profoundly refreshed and reconnected.

The Benefits of Forest Bathing
Spending time among trees is a proven way to enhance wellbeing. Research suggests that it can support immune function, regulate blood pressure, balance blood sugar levels, and reduce stress hormones. Many participants report feeling calmer, more focused, and creatively inspired, with improvements in sleep and overall mental clarity. A deeper connection with nature often leads to a renewed sense of connection with oneself and others—a feeling we witness time and again.

Outdoor Sessions in All Seasons
Our walks take place in all weather, as nature’s charm unfolds in every season. With appropriate clothing—layers, waterproofs, and sturdy footwear—you’ll find comfort in the elements. A warm drink and a snack can enhance the experience, helping us to linger in nature’s embrace. Sessions proceed unless high winds or storms make conditions unsafe.
