Yesterday was a big day for me.
- We did early onboarding for Stand Up Copy
- The new Beyond the Launch curriculum rolled out
- And my nanny went to jail
Let’s not pretend you give a shit about anything except the nanny story.
I’ve had a part-time nanny for a few months, and the kids LOVE her.
Which worked in her favor because she was always late, and regularly last minute cancelled on me.
Sometimes because she needed to go to the ER because she nicked her leg shaving, sometimes because she needed to spend the day with her dog.
I almost let her go, but we had a come-to-Jesus moment and I decided we’d give it another go.
(For the children, duh.)
It goes well that Friday, then I pre-pay her for the following week on Sunday.
Yesterday, she texts that she’ll be 5 mins late.
No biggie.
15 minutes go by.
30 minutes.
I text her.
Text undelivered.
I call her. Straight to voicemail.
I’m cursing her name an hour later, promptly reworking the days’ commitments and calls.
I shoot a DM to the local nanny/mom Facebook group’s admin, since that’s where we connected.
The admin is livid, bans her from the group, puts a post up about 0 tolerance for that behavior and I’m like — damn, I hope she’s okay because I’m gonna feel bad otherwise.
I send a Zelle request for the money back, along with a strongly worded text.
*ding*
I get a notification.
Someone commented a screenshot of her mugshot from the county jail’s FB page.
Oope.
Explains a lot.
We dig deeper to find there was a warrant, probation violations and some offense from over a year ago.
I’m big mad, but a few hours later I get a Zelle with my money back.
Time for a new nanny.
This time… background checks.
There’s no business lesson in this story.
