What is āBarrier Repairā?
Barrier repair refers to the process of restoring the skin's protective barrier, which is essential for maintaining healthy skin. Does your skin look red and irritated? Do you feel dry and tight? Your barrier may be compromised! The skin barrier is a thin layer of lipids, ceramides, and proteins that shields the skin from irritants, allergens, and environmental damage.
Causes of Barrier Damage:
- Aggressive skincare products
- Over-exfoliation
- Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis)
- Medical treatments (chemotherapy)
- Environmental Factors
How to Repair the Skin Barrier:
1. Use Gentle Skincare Products:
- Opt for gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and toners formulated with soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and chamomile and calendula.
- Avoid harsh detergents and topicals.
- Do not over exfoliate. Be conscious of scrubs (see the one I recommend here) or use an enzyme based exfoliant once a week. (Check out this glow getter) Once a week is plenty!
2. Moisturize Regularly:
- Look for moisturizers containing ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or peptides, which help to strengthen and repair the skin barrier. All three Sorella moisturizers include all of these ingredients.
- Apply a good moisturizer twice daily. Consider using a richer moisturizer at night, or locking it in with a few drops of this.
3. Protect from the Sun:
