As more school districts transition to a four-day school week (4dsw), a recent study from the University of Montana raises important questions about its impact on education quality. This longitudinal analysis (2008-2023) found that districts using a 4dsw schedule generally saw lower academic achievement and attendance rates while spending more per student than five-day school week (5dsw) districts. The study explores key factors such as cost-effectiveness, student outcomes, graduation rates, teacher recruitment, and scheduling. The findings suggest that while the 4dsw model may offer some benefits, it has not been broadly beneficial for most students in Montana. Researchers recommend state-level policy changes, including revising Montana law to require 180 school days. This report serves as a valuable resource for policymakers and educators navigating the future of school scheduling. |
