While most people are excited for the end of the school year, especially children, it can be a stressful time for some as there are end of the year exams, final projects, and preparing for the following school year. Here at Finding Hope Wellness Center, we have skilled providers who can assist you or your child through counseling services and psychological testing!
Counseling can help one learn how to overcome a variety of obstacles. Students can experience anxiety as the school year comes to an end as they may worry about topics such as academic pressure and feeling the need to pass their classes, transitioning to a new school or class the following year, social concerns, and more. Even parents may feel anxious as their child moves onto the next grade and phase in their lives. All of our providers specialize in working with individuals who experience anxiety and stress. We can teach you different techniques to help manage these anxious feelings and thoughts through ways such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), practicing mindfulness techniques, aid in developing healthy lifestyles and self-care plans, and more!
End of the school year also means it might be time to have an updated psychological or psychoeducational evaluation for your child, especially if they have a 504 Plan or Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The IEP and 504 Plans are required to be updated periodically in the state of Florida. This is to ensure that the student still requires interventions or accommodations in an educational setting. The interventions and accommodations may be changed or updated to better fit the students needs, especially as they continue to grow and transition into higher grade levels and even college. If your child does not have a 504 Plan or IEP, completing a psychoeducational evaluation can assist in examining if your child meets criteria for one. Our clinical psychologists are dedicated to utilizing evidenced-based practices to best determine what interventions or accommodations your child may benefit from.

5 Tips to Manage End of School-Year Stress
1. BASIC
HEALTHY HABITS
Getting back to the basics and developing healthy habits is so crucial! Eating balanced and nutritious meals, staying hydrated, being outside in nature, creating a self-care plan, and regularly exercising has so many positive effects on not only your physical health, but also your mental well-being. Having a self-care plan with regularly scheduled healthy habits may make developing these healthy habits easier, and less stressful.
2. SLEEP
Having quality sleep is essential for everyone. Researching how many hours of sleep your child should get based on their age is encouraged. Limiting the amount of screen time before bed, especially at least 1 hour before bed, is important as the blue light from electronics (i.e. TV's, tablets, phones, computers) can keep people awake and impact the quality of your sleep. It is recommended to remove electronic devices from the bedroom. If your child struggles with going to sleep at night, having a sleep routine may be helpful.
3. PLAN. PLAN. PLAN.
Creating daily and weekly routines may help alleviate some feelings of anxiety as you and your child will know what to expect. You can set aside time each week to look ahead and see: what events are this week, when assignments/ projects are due, find time to relax, and more. This allows you and your child to see when they have time to complete tasks and can break bigger tasks (i.e. projects, studying for final exams) into smaller tasks to accomplish a piece of it almost each day until it is complete. Don't forget to plan for self-care and down time!
4. MAKE TIME FOR FUN & TO CELEBRATE THE VICTORIES
In addition to planning your week filled with healthy habits and completing tasks, schoolwork, projects, chores, and so much more, it is also important to remember to plan time for fun and to celebrate you and your child's victories throughout the journey! Setting aside time for quality time with friends and family, extracurricular activities, and unstructured time for play can help find a balance between doing tasks that are necessary, but not the most fun, and still being able to find something to enjoy in each day!
5. WAYS PARENTS CAN HELP
Parents play a crucial role in helping children and teaching them. Children often learn by example and can pick up on habits their parents do, including seeing how their parents manage stress. Some ways parents can be a role model for managing stress includes:
-Model coping techniques
-Teach your child how deep breathing can help regulate their emotions
-Help reframe negative thoughts into positive ones
-Remind your child of their strengths and how to enjoy the process of learning
