Volume 3, Issue 10
April 8, 2025
I’m thinking about taking some time off from the newsletter in the month of May as I work to wrap up a few projects. Here’s what I’m working on:
  • I would like to wrap up my course on the book of Revelation. It will include video lessons, a workbook, and applicable links.
  • I am also wrapping up a workbook/course on the book of Habakkuk. I did the study at a retreat with some amazing women, and I want to share it with you, too.
  • As I’m going back through the book of Colossians, I’m itching to turn my notes into a study for you.
  • In addition to these Bible studies, I would like to get my podcast up and running with a series on the fundamentals of Christianity. My goal is to help you recognize counterfeit “Christians” when you see them.
I have discovered that it is hard for me to work on these projects when my focus is so divided, so I may need to take a break from writing the weekly newsletters, hunker down, and focus. I’ll let you know what I decide to do. In the meantime, here is this week’s newsletter.

Mountain Climber
If you are reading through the Bible this year, you are a mountain climber. I have included some information below to help you reach your goal.

This week should put you reading through the book of Ruth and beginning 1 Samuel. This is when a chronological reading really shines because you get to read the Psalms while you’re reading what was going on in David’s life when he wrote them.

In February, the Treasure Hunters spent the month in the book of Ruth, so if you’re wanting some background and commentary on that book, head over to the newsletter library and read the first 4 issues of volume 3. Click the link below to go straight to the page.
The book of 1 Samuel will take you through how Israel ended up choosing a human king instead of submitting to God as their king. First Samuel chapter 8 is a pivotal chapter in the history of Israel and should receive special attention. As you read through the rest of Israel’s history and into the section of prophets in your study, keep 1 Samuel 8 in mind.

God warned the people what a king would do to them, and He was proven right over and over again throughout their history. It was because they chose a king that the nation would be taken captive by Babylon and their cities, including Jerusalem, would be destroyed.

Treasure Hunter
Treasure Hunters spend each month (give or take) in a different book of the Bible. They read the book multiple times, study the context of the book (historical, literary, and cultural), and dig deeper into passages that draw them in.

The book of Colossians is a letter written by Paul (and Timothy in some capacity) to the Christians at Colossae. As an epistle, it contains most of the common features of a letter written during this time: Salutation, thanksgiving and/or prayer, body, exhortation, and conclusion.

The book also has characteristics of a disputation. Paul argues the Gospel side of a debate between the all-sufficiency of Christ and the false teaching that was entering the church.
Historical Context
The epistle of Colossians was written around 62 A.D. when Paul was imprisoned in Rome. The church of Colossae was apparently planted by Epaphras, a Colossian who heard Paul preach on a trip to Ephesus while Paul was there over a three-year period. Epaphras was saved and took the Gospel back to his hometown. While Paul had never been to the church in person, he shared a friendship with Epaphras and stayed current on the goings on of the church.
Literary Context
The book of Colossians is a letter written by Paul (and Timothy in some capacity) to the Christians at Colossae. As an epistle, it contains most of the common features of a letter written during this time: Salutation, thanksgiving and/or prayer, body, exhortation, and conclusion.
