MCSA JHB Chairman’s Awards
This month, the Johannesburg Section of the Mountain Club of South Africa had the privilege of acknowledging individuals whose service and loyalty have left a lasting impact on our community.
 
Chairman's Award – Lourens Janse van Rensburg
We are proud to present this year’s Chairman’s Award to Lourens Janse van Rensburg, in recognition of his unwavering dedication to the Club. Lourens has quietly and consistently served within the Hiking Portfolio, showing exceptional commitment to land stewardship and orientation meets. His behind-the-scenes work, and selfless contribution reflect the spirit of MCSA at its best — reliable, humble, and rooted in a deep love for the outdoors.
 
Celebrating 65 Years of Membership – Bruno Penzhorn
In a special moment of reflection and gratitude, Bennie de Wet, Oliver Oppler, and Dylan Labuschagne had the honour of presenting Bruno Penzhorn with an award commemorating his 65 years of membership with MCSA Johannesburg. The presentation was held at Bruno’s residence in Pretoria — a fitting tribute to a member who has dedicated a lifetime to the Club and the mountains we all cherish.
 
We extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Lourens, Bruno, and all who continue to uphold the values, legacy, and community of the MCSA.

urgent notice
EAGLE SEASON

Climbers, please remember that Eagle Season means that sections of crags that have Eagles nests on them are CLOSED. From the beginning of April to the end of August; unless cameras or person monitors at the provincial environmental departments deem the nest not used. If there is no activity by July, we are able to issue an all clear to climb on those crag sections. Please adhere to these rules, fights with the departments are not enjoyable.
 
There were climbers climbing in the Eagle section of Bronkies this past weekend. Please check that your buddies (if they are new to the sport) are climbing where they should be climbing and not in the closed sections. Hopefully, this year we will have successful nests. It has been 4 years since there was a chick that fledged Bronkies! Hold thumbs.

NOT SEKORORO
 
Thanks to an exceptionally wet season, the Olifants River was running too high for a safe crossing—so Sekororo will have to wait for another time. Not to be deterred, we took full advantage of the swollen waterways and diverted our plans to one of the Loskop kloofs instead. Fun still found us and we had a great weekend all round! We'll aim for Sekororo again next season…
