For this issue of Welcome Home I share how we created Casa de Mayo - a home located on the untamed beaches of Mermejita, Oaxaca. 

 

From 2022 to 2024 Casa de Mayo is a space shaped by listening — to the wind, to the shifting light, to the changing seasons of Mermejita Beach. Rather than impose, it flows with the land, opening itself to the elements. Light moves gently through its open spaces; the ocean breeze travels freely across rooms. This is a home designed to interact with its surroundings, to reflect the quiet power of nature and the landscapes that inspired it.

 

It is not a place of permanence, but of presence — rooted, responsive, and always becoming.

Casa de Mayo is an ode to Mexico’s living artistry, a convergence of craft and care.

Clay that breathes: barro from Oaxaca used in kitchen essentials.

Textiles that speak: naturally dyed, 
hand-embroidered fabrics.

Palm that shelters: Palapa roofs crafted by maestros from Guerrero.

Stone with memory: green cantera from Oaxaca integrated throughout.
