Real (approachable) Style Advice for Real (grown-up) Women with
Real (smart) Budgets

Friday, April 18, 2025
Hello First name / friend,

Happy Easter Weekend! 🐣

We’re heading to Chicago to visit our boys this weekend (minus our youngest, who’s staying on campus to soak up these final weeks before graduation…and, who can blame him?)

I’m sending this email out on Friday, since today’s topic is something you can use right away for any plans you might have this weekend or in the weeks ahead.

We’re diving into how to create great looks using what you already own—perfect for spring events, casual get-togethers, or just feeling pulled together day to day.

I’m also excited to share a new feature inside the Spring Style System called “Is That Dated? 🤷‍♀️  Each week, I’ll take a past outfit (starting with a selfie of yours truly from the 2018 Spring Style System group!) and break down what still works, what doesn’t, and why. I’ll also be answering member questions and reviewing photos of specific pieces from your wardrobes to help you determine if they’re still working.

It’s a fun, judgment-free way to learn what keeps a look fresh—and what might be quietly aging your style.

Now’s the perfect time to join in and get personalized, practical advice all season long - for one low price - NO subscriptions or commitment!

🥁And now, for the first installment of Is That Dated? 👀

“Is That Dated?” — Featuring Dress Day, Spring 2018

Let’s take a little style time travel back to 2018 and break down this outfit from one of the original Spring Style System prompts.

First things first—no judgment here. As always, wear what you love. But if you’re curious about how style evolves and want to keep your look feeling current, these little breakdowns can be helpful.

👗 The navy maxi dress? Still a yes. The simple lines, maxi length with a slit, I'd probably shorten it a few inches to just above my ankle. I love the shoulder-flattering neckline and the timeless navy.  I’m actually sad it didn’t survive my big closet edit during our move..

👡 The sandals? Not so much. The perforated gray/taupe suede and heavy foot coverage feel dated, both in sandal and bootie form. A better option today would be a flatform or wedge espadrille with simple leather straps in tan or cognac.

📿 The necklace is on the bubble. It’s delicate and not overly heavy, so it could still work. But with this dress, I’d swap it for a more modern touch—like a shorter link necklace or layered gold chains.

🧣 The scarf? Definitely dated. It’s too long, too colorful, and just… too much. If you love scarves, a smaller version (paired with a jacket) or a solid color might still work—but for a dress like this, I’d skip the scarf altogether.

🧥 The denim jacket debate: Ah yes, remember the Kut from the Kloth jacket I told everyone they had to have back in 2018? Yep… that distressed, fitted style has officially fallen out of favor with the style mavens. But the white one I’m wearing here? It’s less fitted, more versatile, and I still wear it. The super classic cropped and fitted jean jackets may be considered dated, but I say—if it still works for you, go for it. Just skip the distressed wash…and wear it with current pieces like wide leg pants, current shoes, and a modern link necklace.  Here's a great resource for the current looks in denim jackets.

➡️➡️ I’ll be doing more Is That Dated?🤷‍♀️ check-ins throughout the season, and I’d love to include your questions and wardrobe pieces too. Join us in the Spring Style System to get personalized feedback and style updates that feel refreshingly simple and doable.

2. Tipsy Tuesday: Getting Ready for Spring Events (Without Panic-Buying)

It’s that time of year—graduations, showers, Mother’s Day brunches, and all the events that say “What am I going to wear?”

Before you add a dress to your cart that you might wear once, let’s slow down and shop your closet first.
Here’s your refreshingly simple, step-by-step guide to getting dressed for any spring event—(hopefully) using what you already own:

Step 1: Evaluate the event
What kind of event is it? Indoors or outdoors? Casual, festive, or somewhere in between? Check the weather, too—especially for anything outside.

Step 2: Define the dress code (for you)
Does this call for a dress, or would a top + pants work just as well? How dressed up do you want to feel? Do you need walkable shoes? Layers? A hands-free bag?

Step 3: Shop your closet like a stylist
Pull out possible pieces—dresses, sets, jumpsuits, etc. Try mixing a special top/blouse with jeans or trousers. Don’t just imagine it—actually try it on. You’ll be surprised what works when you get creative.

Step 4: Accessorize with intention
Shoes, jewelry, a wrap—these make or break the look. Use accessories to elevate and tie everything together. And don't forget details like you lips and nails. My weekend away capsule includes pops of red, and I got a mani with Big Apple Red to tie it all together. 🍎

Step 5: Identify the gaps
If you’re missing a key item—maybe a better shoe or a modern earring—put that on your targeted shopping list. Only buy what will complete the look (and ideally, work for other outfits too).

Bonus Tip: Take a quick outfit pic once you’ve got it. Trust me, it’ll save you time and stress later!

This is how you create elevated, event-worthy looks—without the panic or the over-spending.
Let's do this and #justgetdressed. 😘
