🌿 June – A Symphony of Summer Scents & Sights 🌿 June ushers in the beginning of British summertime—a gentle invitation from nature to slow down and savour the season. Roses unfurl their velvet petals, releasing a heady perfume that lingers in the balmy, lengthening evenings. The Summer Solstice, falling this year on Saturday 21st June, marks the astronomical start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and gifts us the longest day of the year. Rich in ancient tradition, it is a time of global celebration. Midsummer’s Day, traditionally observed on 24th June, reflects an older reckoning of the turning year and adds its own touch of folklore to this radiant season. Everywhere, flora is flourishing. Gardens are ablaze with colour, while hedgerows—depending on where you roam—are adorned with the frothy white blossoms of hawthorn and elder. The elderflower’s sweet scent heralds the season of refreshing cordials and summer rituals. As the holly blossom fades, horse chestnut trees still hold their upright spires, soon to be joined by the delicate, lime-scented bracts of the linden tree. Often smelt before seen, lime flowers have long been cherished in France as a calming ‘tilleul’ infusion—perfect for winding down after a sun-filled day. This is a month when nature speaks loudly through scent. The warm air carries fragrances more acutely, stirring memories and deepening presence. Wild strawberries and other seasonal berries delight the senses, as picnic hampers make their annual return. Wherever you are, we encourage you to respond to nature’s call. Perhaps it’s a mindful tea break on a patch of grass, a quiet lunch by a blooming window box, or a picnic beneath the trees. Note that Wednesday June 18th is now International Picnic Day! Let June tempt you into her embrace—and remember, on the hottest days, the dappled shade beneath a leafy canopy is nature’s own air conditioning. 🌳 Join us for a Forest Bathing experience on Sunday 29th June, set within the serene grounds of the Harry Edwards Foundation near Shere, Surrey. Come and immerse yourself in the peace and beauty of the season. |

The month could be named after Juno, the Roman Goddess linked with marriage. To the Anglo-Saxons, it was called sera monath (dry month), which is not necessarily our modern-day experience. According to author Robert Graves and the modern Celtic tradition, June marks the transition between the sixth and seventh moon months of the Celtic calendar. The Hawthorn Moon runs from 13th May to 9th June, and the Oak Moon spans from 10th June to 7th July. |
|
🌸 The Hawthorn Moon – A Time of Fertile Fire & Faery Whispers 🌸 As we journey deeper into the lighter half of the year, we enter the magical phase of the Hawthorn Moon, closely following the vibrant energies of Beltane. Known in the Celtic tree calendar as Huath (pronounced Hoh-uh), the hawthorn embodies a potent blend of beauty and protection—its delicate blossoms often masking the sharpness of its thorns. Rich in symbolism, hawthorn resonates with masculine energy, fire, and fertility. Traditionally, this time of year is believed to align with heightened male vitality and outward creative expression. In ancient practices, hawthorn was invoked in rituals to support bold decisions, dynamic action, and the forging of professional connections or business ventures. But hawthorn also holds deep faery lore. It’s said that when hawthorn grows in companionship with ash and oak, the veil to the faerie realm is thinnest—and the nature spirits are especially drawn to the energy of these sacred triads. Whether you encounter a lone hawthorn on a country walk or a blossoming hedgerow weaving through the landscape, pause a moment. Breathe in its enchantment, and perhaps, if you're lucky, you may feel the presence of something unseen, whispering on the breeze. |
|
🌳 The Oak Moon – A Gateway to Strength, Growth & Abundance 🌳 As we move through the leafy height of early summer, we are embraced by the energy of the Oak Moon, a time when the trees stretch tall and strong, their canopies nearing full bloom. The majestic oak, revered by the ancient Druids, stands as a symbol of power, endurance, and sacred wisdom—its towering presence often forming the heart of ancient groves. In Druidic tradition, oak is linked to fertility, strength, success, and abundance—qualities ripe for calling in during this vibrant season of outward expansion. The Celts named this lunar month Duir, a word believed to mean “door,” and perhaps the root of “Druid”—suggesting this time is a threshold, an opening to deeper understanding and natural alignment. Folk wisdom tells us that carrying an acorn brings good fortune in interviews or new ventures, while catching a falling oak leaf promises health and vitality throughout the year. As you wander through wooded paths or leafy parks this month, let the presence of the oak inspire groundedness and courage. Pause beneath its boughs, breathe deeply, and step through this seasonal doorway with intention and grace. |

Encounters with Wildlife - Adder With the recent sunny spells, the Adder is one of the first creatures to emerge as the weather warms. We were fortunate to spot one in Epsom a few years ago while scouting a new site—a reminder of the quiet magic of nature’s cycles. Adders in the UK typically emerge from hibernation in early spring, around March, and are most active during the warmer summer months. On sunny days, you may find them basking in the sunlight, warming up after the long winter months. They're a sight that reminds us of the changing seasons, and a beautiful example of nature’s resilience. Symbolically, the Adder is a powerful creature tied to transformation and rebirth. As a symbol of the snake, it represents shedding old skins and emerging anew, an important metaphor for personal growth and renewal. In many cultures, snakes are associated with the energy of the earth and the wisdom that comes from deep, ancestral knowledge. The Adder’s quiet presence in nature reminds us to embrace change with grace and confidence, knowing that transformation often leads to greater strength and understanding. A close encounter with an Adder invites reflection on these themes: transformation, protection, and the balance between danger and beauty in nature. [If you like the idea of exploring our island's traditional ways, then Katie thoroughly recommends The Way of the Buzzard, where Nicola and Jason Smalley share the wonders of nature through their eloquent words, as well as Jason's extraordinarily beautiful Earthlight films. Their membership is open once or twice a year.] |
