Our local food-and-drink landscape continues to evolve, with fresh openings, exciting remodels, and new ventures taking root. From a dramatic casino renovation and sushi upgrades to the launch of a horticultural consultancy and forthcoming fondue franchise, there’s plenty brewing in the Reno-Tahoe area.

This week’s feature stories highlight some of the diversity of our local food scene. One invites diners to reel in their own dinner at a mountain resort. Another traces the global history and cultural significance of the plantain. And in Fallon, a small-town butcher is bringing back traditional meat-cutting techniques with a fresh approach.

People often frequent restaurants to avoid the shopping, prep, and cooking involved in creating a meal at home. But every once in a while, a restaurant dining experience comes along for which it’s worth rolling up your sleeves. At Everline Resort & Spa in Olympic Valley, diners are invited to catch their own dinner in the property’s trout-stocked lake.

The culinary journey of the plantain is complex. It includes travels through the trade routes of Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, its introduction to Europe by Alexander the Great, and its arrival on the African continent via Trans-Saharan Arab merchants. The plant made it to the Caribbean basin — in the bellies of slave ships — where it has been adopted for users in many Latin American dishes.
