TIPS FOR WEEK TWO: - Because following the color placement in the pattern is super important I, again, highly recommend using the color chart linked above. (I know there is technically one in the pattern too, but I prefer the larger size of the one that's linked.) I also taped mine up in my sewing room so I can easily reference it while making my quilt. The chart also includes tags for labeling your colors, which you might find really helpful too!
- Speaking of tags…On Page 22 of the pattern, you’ll find tags for labeling your pieces. These are incredibly helpful for staying organized during the QAL. I like to use binding clips to attach the tags to the corresponding pieces. Check out my blog post HERE for more ways you can stay organized during the QAL.
- I know I’m sounding like a broken record, but starching and pressing your fabric before cutting truly makes a big difference. Removing any wrinkles or creases helps ensure more accurate cuts and, eventually, a more enjoyable sewing experience. Plus, the starch adds a little more structure to the fabric, making it easier to work with while sewing.
- Make sure your rotary blade is nice and sharp. This might seem obvious, but it's worth a quick reminder - If it's been a while since you last replaced the blade and you find yourself using a lot of pressure to cut, it’s probably time for a new one before you get started.
- I recommend cutting your WOF (Width of Fabric) cuts first. I find it helpful (and a time saver) to cut the bolded WOF strips in the cutting instructions BEFORE moving on to the individual pieces. After that, I go back and subcut those strips. To be clear, I do this for one fabric/color at a time.
- If you feel overwhelmed by the cutting instructions, take a moment to look at the quantities listed for each piece - you’ll notice that many are in the single digits. I promise, cutting your fabric will take less time than you probably expect!
- Some of the letters in the Large Throw cutting instructions are not listed in alphabetical order. Long story short, this was done intentionally to keep fabric waste to a minimum and to avoid having to assign multiple letters to the same piece. Just a heads up in case anyone finds it confusing!
