Custom Italian Travel Planning for Unforgettable Moments
Through the Arch
Ciao!

Later today, my husband and I will be on our way to Rome. We're heading to the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, better known as the Italian Open—that final, crucial clay tournament where the world's best players fine-tune their game before Roland Garros. It just so happens that the tournament falls over Mother's Day, so I took the opportunity to turn the usual "I'd just like a nice brunch" into "I'm spending a long weekend in Rome!" No complaints here!

As if watching world-class tennis wasn't exciting enough, we'll also be in Rome during an incredibly historic moment - the Papal conclave! The timing is absolutely surreal. Between matches, I'll be glancing toward Vatican City, watching for that magical white smoke that signals a new Pope has been elected. One minute cheering for a backhand winner, the next potentially witnessing history unfold at the Vatican. Insane.

This got me thinking about how sporting events make for perfect travel anchors. Last year, I built trips around both the Kentucky Derby and the Summer Olympics in Paris (still pinching myself that we really went to both in the same year). There's something magical about experiencing a destination when it's buzzing with competition energy—those moments when an entire city collectively holds its breath as athletes push boundaries.

Italy, as it happens, offers SO MANY sporting events worth planning around.  So while I'll be spending my weekend cheering on clay court champions and eating way too much carbonara, I'd love to know—which of the sporting events below would tempt YOU to build a vacation around it? When you decide, let me know, and let's plan it together!

Until then, I'll be the one at the Foro Italico sipping an Aperol Spritz, husband by my side, no kids in sight, cheering every point, and pinching myself yet again!

Ciao for now!

Discover: Italy through sport
Italian Grand Prix
What:  Italy's Formula 1 Race
When:  September
Where:  Monza
Stay: Hotel Principe di Savoia
Combine with:  A few days in Milan or Lake Como
hotel principe di savoia
While other race fans battle traffic staying closer to the track, choose to live the high life just steps from Milan's Central Station, where direct trains whisk you to Monza in 15 minutes flat (no Italian parking nightmares, thank you very much).

After a day of engine roars and champagne showers (well, watching them at least), you'll appreciate returning to the Principe's legendary service and soundproofed rooms that ensure you'll actually hear yourself think.

Don't be surprised if you spot a driver or team principal nursing an espresso in the lobby—this classic grand dame is a known accommodation of choice for the F1 elite.  Toto Wolff - is that you?
Palio di siena
What: Horse race between the 17 contrade (neighborhoods) of Siena
When:  July 2 and August 16 every year
Where:  Siena
Stay: Grand Hotel Continental Siena
Combine with:  Florence and other Tuscan destinations
Grand Hotel Continental Siena
Aside from the fact that this is the only five-star accommodation in the center of Siena,
this hotel transforms into the ultimate insider's perch for the Palio.

While day-trippers fight for standing room on the narrow medieval streets, you'll be sipping prosecco on the hotel's terrace, watching costumed processions pass by, before the concierge escorts you to your reserved viewing spot for the historical race in the Piazza del Campo.

After witnessing the thunderous 90-second horse race and the emotional aftermath (expect tears of both the happy and the sad kind), retreat to the cool comfort of the hotel's vibey lounge or atmospheric wine cellar built within ancient stone walls to toast the day's victories.
Serie A
What: Professional Italian soccer league
When:  September to May
Where:  Lecce
Stay: Patria Palace Hotel
Combine with:  The southern tip of Puglia
patria palace hotel
Let's be honest—scoring tickets to see Juventus, Roma, Napoli or Inter can require a second mortgage and some serious connections. So if your goal is really to “watch an Italian football game”, enter U.S. Lecce, a team that typically hovers near the relegation zone and where seats are actually available.

The elegant Patria Palace puts you in prime position for this authentic Italian football experience. After a morning admiring Lecce's stunning baroque architecture (the hotel itself sits opposite the ornate Basilica of Santa Croce), stroll to Piazza Sant'Oronzo to join the locals for a pre-game aperitivo. The stadium is just a quick taxi ride away, where you'll join families who've supported the giallorossi through thick and (mostly) thin.

This is football as Italians actually live it, not the tourist version, and that's a victory regardless of the scoreboard. Pack something giallo (yellow) or rosso (red) to blend in with the locals!
Giro d'italia
What: Three week long Italian cycling race
When:  May
Where:  All over Italy
Stay: Villa Paola
Combine with:  Sicily
Villa Paola
The 2026 course won't be released for some time, so for now, let's just pretend that the Giro will take the cyclist right down to the tip of the boot to the seaside destination of Tropea.

This former 16th-century convent turned boutique hotel clings dramatically to the cliffs above Tropea, and might offer front-row seats to cycling's most beautiful grand tour without having to elbow your way through crowds.

And after watching the riders zip past in an actual blink of an eye, you're in an idylic spot to enjoy the rest of your holiday.  Surrender to Villa Paola's tranquility: wander through Mediterranean gardens, cool off in the infinity pool, or descend the private path to Tropea's beach for a refreshing swim.

Be sure to brush up on your Italian skills though - this region of Calabria is mostly still undiscovered by American tourism.
2026 Winter Olympics
What:  The Olympics need no explanation
When:  February 6 to 22, 2026
Where:  Milan and Cortina
Stay: Franceschi Park Hotel
Combine with:  Skiing in the Dolomites
Franceschi Park Hotel
When the 2026 Winter Olympics transform Cortina into the white-hot center of the sporting universe, you'll thank the you of the past for choosing a hotel right in the middle of the festive atmosphere. This classic Alpine retreat hotel offers the perfect balance of being close enough to feel the Olympic electricity but positioned juuuuust far enough from the madness to actually get some sleep between events.

The magic of the Olympics in Cortina? Between watching events, you can click into your own skis or strap onto your own board and hit the slopes!  Also, because this charming mountain village is pretty small, you're practically guaranteed celebrity and athlete sightings. Don't be surprised when you're ordering a spritz next to a gold medalist at Enoteca or spot that famous German bobsledder browsing in the same boutique as you on Corso Italia.

Start securing your reservations approximately... yesterday. Olympic accommodations like this are sure to go fast.

Ciao for now!
