Before You Go

 RULES TO KNOW

JamboFirst name / friend!

We are home from Africa!  I hope you all followed along on Facebook and Instagram, we had so many incredible animal sightings.

We all had an amazing time, and I will write a full report after the jet lag wears off.    It was a bit tricky getting home, Air France cancelled everyone's flight from Nairobi to Paris the evening of departure.  That was “special” but everyone was rebooked and made it out as scheduled, although with some creative routings unfortunately.

Sam and I were delayed in Doha due to the war, but we made the most of it and had a nice time visiting the Souq Waqif.   Qatar Airways gets a gold star for their rebooking process, and covered a 5 star hotel, meals and transfers.  My first time in the Middle East, and a very interesting city to visit.

Everywhere you travel, especially  Zanzibar and Qatar look a a bit different  (but that’s the point of travel, right?).

Beyond the usual cultural norms, some destinations have very specific rules that can catch even the most seasoned travelers off guard.   I was turned away from St. Peters Basilica years ago because I had on a sleeveless top.

For a minute I thought the nuns and priests at St. Mary's School had finally caught  up with me.   My relationship with the Catholic Church usually involved skipping mass so I could go ride my horse.
I would swing by and pick up the weekly program though..my parents always demanded “proof” that I had gone to church.   I suspect my mom was on to me.

Sam and I are still talking about the totally clueless woman we saw in Morocco.
Why  you ask? She was wearing a crop top and bike shorts that left NOTHING to the imagination.
This outfit would have been skimpy at a spinning class. We wanted to throw a tarp over her, it was not a good look.  And of course she was a fellow American. #soproud
BTW Morocco is a very religious Muslim country. You don't need to wear a burka, but walking around in your underwear is not cool.    Zanzibar is a Muslim country too, so in the villages women need to keep arms covered.

From banned clothing to restricted medications, it’s the little details that can turn into major headaches if you don’t know about them ahead of time.

Here are a few  important rules to know before you jet off ↓
XO, Jackie
No Camo in Antigua

Have any camo-printed clothing packed? Leave it at home! Wearing or carrying anything with a camouflage pattern is illegal for civilians on the island — it’s reserved strictly for military personnel. In fact, this is a common law across the Caribbean, so be aware.
Medications Banned In Japan

Medications like Sudafed, Adderall, and even Melatonin are restricted or completely banned in Japan. You’ll need to check ahead and possibly get approval before traveling with them!  This is not only Japan, I send out a drug guide with my itineraries.
No High Heels At Ancient Sites

Historic preservation is serious business. To protect ancient monuments like the Acropolis, visitors aren’t allowed to wear high heels when exploring these sites.
Leave those stilettos home, you could break an ankle anyway.
No Gum In Singapore

Bringing chewing gum into Singapore is heavily restricted — and spitting it out on the street? Big fines. Definitely not worth it.
No Sandcastles In Spain

Think twice before building your beach masterpiece — some towns in Spain have banned sandcastles because they're considered a public hazard or obstruction!
You should always fill holes you dig in the sand anyway, especially during sea turtle nesting  season.
I couldn't leave you without a few honorable mentions, now could I?
  • No swearing in public in the UAE (serious fines!)
  • No feeding pigeons in Venice (yes, really)
  • No running out of gas on Germany’s autobahn (also illegal!)
  • DUI or another charge on your record? Canada is not welcoming you.
There’s way more to travel than just knowing what to pack — and that’s where working with an advisor can be handy.  From drug rules to camo bans, I’m here to help you travel smarter (and stress-free).

📌 P.S. Know a rule I missed? Hit reply and tell me — I’d love to hear it!
