Issue #39 | May 5, 2025

Welcome back to Beyond the Tour where twice a month you'll receive practical tips and resources to help you get better at what you do. No fluff. All business.

Let's do this.
Miriam
If You Do One Thing This Week:
1. 🗓️ Get ahead of the calendar.
Create a summer calendar to share who is in the office on which dates. Knowing who is in at which times will help you structure your summer meetings. You will have key information to share, and others will have information that you need. Plan ahead and book meetings to share information and stay on track.

How to get started? Here are a few options:
  1. If you use shared calendars, create a “Summer Calendar” and ask each person on the leadership team to put in their known time out of the office. Share this calendar with your calendar so you can easily see who is in / out on which dates.
  2. Create a shared document where each person puts in their dates out of the office. Bonus points: Make a list of everyone on your leadership team by name, so that it is clear who still needs to complete their information;
  3. Designate one person (maybe it's you!) to walk around and collect summer vacation information, and have them share it with the team. If it's one person's job, it's more likely to get done.

2 Tips to DO MORE:

2. 💡 Keep learning.
Do a summer book club with your team (your leadership team, admission team, advancement team - you choose). It's helpful for everyone to have a shared experience and shared language. This is a great summer project.

Right now I am reading Unreasonable Hospitality, by Will Guidara, and I recommend it highly. This would be an ideal summer read for any admission office or school leadership team to read and reconsider how you do business. Take things from transactional to exceptionally, unreasonably relational.

These are some of my other favorite resources. Be in touch if you need inspiration on this. I'll help you find the right book.

3. Breathe.
Congratulations. You made it to mid-May. Whether you are still hustling to fill classes or you are breathing easy because your classes are full, take time to breathe.

Set a timer for 15 minutes:
✔️ Organize files;
✔️ Rearrange furniture;
✔️ Look at the front desk with new eyes;
✔️ Walk around and get a fresh take on the school.

Small things make a big difference. Take the 15 minutes and tidy up. You'll be glad you did.
