Hey there First name / friend,

I hope this newsletter finds you well. But also, if you’re feeling a little glum, that’s okay too. It actually brings me to the point of this week’s delivery to your inbox — let’s talk about why gratitude can feel so elusive.

Human brains are wired to spot the dangers, anticipate problems, and recall the mistakes — it’s what keeps us alive, after all. While this is evolutionarily advantageous, it can also be a pretty big downer for those of us just trying to enjoy life.

So, if we’re wired to spot the storm clouds, what hope do we have of seeing the silver linings?

That, my friends, is where the simplicity of taking things one step at a time comes in. It’s super important to be aware of rain clouds — life’s hurdles — because it’s our job as developing humans to navigate them, right? Yet, to have a fulfilling life, we also need to see and acknowledge the silver linings — life’s little wins.

Just as we have all this go-to wiring in our brains that spot the clouds, we can create and encourage new wiring that allows us to also notice the silver linings. Basically, it’s a skill we can develop over time.

Some were lucky and had modelling that established this skill in childhood. For others, it’s a new trait we want to install so we can level up. The point here is: we are all on this journey. Whether this is an established strength or a fresh upgrade, it can be done.

Just like any new skill, it takes:
  • Intention to develop it,
  • Information on how to implement it,
  • Repetition to wire it in deeply enough for it to stick,
  • And the grace to be patient with yourself as you go.
So — intention, information, repetition, and grace. A recipe for rewiring.

And if you’d like a little inspiration to kick-start your journey, here is a special 6 Minute Moments guided meditation exploring simple gratitude.
