MAY the odds be ever in your favor
🎶Looks like we made it…🎶 (Yes, as sung to the tune of Barry Manilow's song)

That's another month.

More social media posts.

More TV watching, reading, new music to listen to.

There were sunrises and sunsets to bookend our days.

There were commencement ceremonies and celebrations.

There were doctor appointments I've been putting off, but this is life in your 30's, I've accepted that.

There were daydreams about the busy season ending and the summer days kicking in.

There were heart to hearts through text messages.

I've started creating more and taking ownership of what I want to do again - I want to bring back a little bit of that journalism bug that has been chewing away at me recently, to highlight people whose work and projects I've loved.

There has been a lot of coffee to get me through the days, but also more electrolyte drinks, like Splash soda and Unwell by Alex Cooper.

There have been cooler evenings, which I am going to take advantage of before the heat really creeps in and takes over completely.

There have been naps in the afternoon.

I hit the milestone of 10 years at my job and 50 years of the newspaper in the same day.

I've also recently been caught up in the nostalgia of the early 2000s. Maybe it's the ads for Lancome Juicy Tubes by Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray, the fact that Freakier Friday is coming out soon and Lindsay Lohan's career is thriving once again. Or maybe it's that I've been listening to that Disney book, thinking back to all of my own memories that were somehow interconnected to all the pop culture references that made such a stamp on my teen years, like High School Musical and Hannah Montana.

So, yeah, there's been a lot of life lived in the last month. And now, after having my first Friday off from work for the summer. I've started making my list of what I want to do with the summer - tasks I want to do, trips I hope to take, the usual. I don't like too much free time; gives too much time to think. I'm working on that. Any ideas on what I should do this summer?

ACTIVITY
  • I've been obsessed with zines and e-zines over the last few months. but, now I'm in the process of making my own! It will be a sort of extension of The Artfully Made Journal. I love that it feels like the 90s are coming back with collages and magazines. Zines feel more personal like little scrapbooks for certain periods of times or seasons in your life. And I'm here for it!
  • In addition to that, I've also been following a lot more of the junk journal/crafty types on Instagram for inspiration. It has also become such a prominent community on Instagram for people to meet up for junk journaling nights or pop in on lives for YouTube and on Zoom. It's great!
  • Bonus: Looking up flights to Nashville, South Carolina or Texas to make a longer weekend over the summer. I love traveling and haven't been anywhere lately, so I think it's time to change that.

LESSONS FROM THE MONTH
  • Sometimes you just have to stop the planning, weighing your options and making the pros/cons lists, and just go for the dream. start writing, start the podcast, send the text, go for the coffee, whatever it may be. Some really exciting things are on the other side of that question or the ‘yes’ you might get. I'm learning to be okay with the imperfection and learning as i go.
  • after listening to the Disney high audiobook, it made me so thankful that the letters I sent in to Disney never went anywhere and that my parents never took me to auditions. Because it is not exactly the happy-go-lucky world it seemed to be. these kids were working and didn't get to have a childhood or navigate their teen years the way the rest of us did, which were hard enough. we all end up on the paths we're supposed to!
  • It isn't my business what other people think of me. 85-90% of things really do come back to how we respond to situations. But, we can't get tripped up in thinking about how people perceive us.
  • It's okay to enjoy things you did when you were a kid. In fact, I think it should be encouraged. Why do we have to stop liking things because we get older?
  • It's so easy to look at influencers and others who are posting on social media, like everything is happening for them. the truth is they've been working just as hard OR they're taking the opportunities that are there for them. A lot of which are available to us too. It's what we make of the tools and resources around us.

Summer as a Kid
Summer as a kid made me feel peace.
Grandma came over each day to babysit.
Candyland for hours, soap operas in the afternoon,
Kid Cuisine TV dinners on our plastic plates.
We'd sit under the tree in the front yard’s shade,
waiting for the ice cream truck—occasionally.
There were always Flintstone Push-Ups in the freezer.
We made crafts we saw on daytime TV,
waited for sales at Michael’s for glue sticks and paint.
Disney movies, dog-eared books,
naps just to pass the time.
Sometimes my cousin came over to play.
We’d beg our parents for sleepovers—or cry if they said no.
Evening bike rides with Dad,
and if he got home in time—
Camelot: bumper boats, arcade games, go-karts.
Nick at Nite until 3 a.m.—
Who’s the Boss and Cheers just because I could,
then sleep until noon.
The TV was my constant companion.
Maybe it’s an only-child thing.
We always made time for family vacations—just us three.
From Disneyland to Monterey,
L.A. lights to the Golden Gate’s glow.
A smile still hits me when I think of that time.
Oh, how I loved that childhood of mine.

I hope everyone's summer is off to a great start!
Any traditions that you look forward to every year? Any special memories you wish you could bring back from childhood?
