As we prepare for summer, we’re lifting up one of our theme texts: Luke 8:41-42, 49-56 

In our story from Luke, we meet Jairus, a father who is deeply worried because his daughter is very sick. He doesn’t hesitate—he runs to Jesus, falls at His feet, and begs for help. Even though Jesus is surrounded by a noisy, crowded group of people, He listens to Jairus. This shows us that Jesus cares about each of us, no matter how busy things might seem. Later, when Jairus gets the heartbreaking news that his daughter has died, Jesus doesn’t let fear or doubt stop Him. Instead, He speaks words of hope: “Do not fear; only believe.” Jesus goes to the little girl, gently takes her hand, and tells her to get up—and she does! This story reminds us that when we are heard and cared for, amazing things can happen. Jesus teaches us that listening can bring comfort, healing, and even new life.

 

The Lord’s Prayer shows us that we can always talk to God, knowing He hears us. When we say, “Our Father,” we’re calling out to a God who loves us like a perfect parent. In the prayer, we ask for God’s kingdom to come, for what we need each day, and for forgiveness when we make mistakes. These words remind us that God is close, paying attention to what’s in our hearts. Just like Jairus trusted Jesus with his fears and needs, we can trust that God listens when we pray, no matter what we’re going through. When we listen to others—whether it’s a camper, a friend, or a family member—we are showing them the same care that Jesus showed Jairus and his daughter. Listening helps people feel seen, loved, and connected to God, and it’s one way we can share God’s presence with the world.
