Issue 53: Imagination with Hunter S. Thompson

Each week we deliver a prompt designed to develop one of your primal powers.
This week's power is Imagination.

Curious which primal power can help you the most? Take our diagnostic.

Imagination

So begins Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, considered the apex of gonzo journalism.

Your prompt is to imagine two more sentences.

First, what sentence would you write next? How would you lead us further into your version of the story?

Second, what sentence might come before this opening line? What's calling them to Barstow, and when and why did they take the drugs?

The goal isn't to guess what Thompson wrote, but for you to imagine the start of a new story.

If you like what you write, please share at the link below.

Why do we do this exercise?
It sharpens your imagination, which is your brain's ability to invent new plans, to
improvise effectively and to create strategy.

Developing imagination can boost innovation, resilience, decision-making, and leadership.

Responses from last month
Last month's prompt was the first line from Maya Angelou's All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes.

Here's one reader's response, chosen at random:

“The day had been a struggle, but evening felt different. The breezes of the West African night were intimate and shy, licking the hair, sweeping through cotton dresses with unseemly intimacy, then disappearing into the utter blackness. Already she felt filled with the sense that life here was going to take her by surprise." — Sue in Columbus, OH.

Thank you to all who shared your work!

In the meantime, Angus is happy to share the launch of the Neuroarts Resource Center (NCR)! Created by the NeuroArts Blueprint Initiative with extensive input from partners and stakeholders across the field, the NRC serves as a dynamic hub for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and innovation. It brings together cutting-edge research, clinical findings, best practices, funding opportunities, and more, all in one place.

The NRC is more than a platform—it’s a growing community. A place where artists, researchers, educators, students, and practitioners come together to share knowledge, spark collaboration, and expand the field. Angus is honored to be a member of the scientific advisory board.
